i believe it shortens the throw between gears, making it possible to change gears faster.

A short throw shifter decreases the distance you move the shifter to go between gears, so if the travel at the top of the shifter is 6 inches going from 1st to 2nd, a B&M short throw shifter set to reduce throw 50% the travel at the top of the shifter after install is 3 inches. This allows quicker shifts when racing.

There are a couple ways to accomplish this. One is to reduce the height of the shift knob by using a shorter shaft. The other is to change the pivot point of the shifter from the end that has the shift knob to the end that attaches to the transmission linkage. Some do one, some do both.

Hope this helps.
