135965, Built head on stock block Posted by jdm1990, Feb-02-12 06:31 PM
As some of you knowi, i'm trying hard to get my car back on the road in the next month. I'm busting my ass trying to save/make enough money to accomplish this. Although it's not something I need to get the car running, my friend offered me a built head he has for a price I will never beat so i'm picking it up. The head has crane 18's, crane polished cam gears, crane titanium springs and ss valves. The performance mods I have are limited to an AEM v2 intake, MS, wally 195 clutchmaster clutch, and soon to have a crank scraper and solid motor mounts off of Mike. The block is stock with between 50&60k on it. From what i've gathered, Crane 18's are an extreme cam for street. My question is can this block be run on my car as is (stock block) or would drivability just be horrible? Also, would there honestly be any benefit.to doing so or what my car just sound like it has cams and nothing more? Either way i'm buying the head, I just curious if it should be kept on the side until I have an upgraded block in the car or not. Personally I love how cars sound with cams (always have), but if it can't be run then so be it. Any input is appriciated.

With some attention to the tune via MegaSquirt you could see some gains on the dyno, but what are your hoping/expecting? Bullett could probably give you a more realistic expectation. Driveability would not likely suffer, but you will definitely need to tweak to attain an idle.
I would personally save it for a high compression build or turbo build.

By the end of this year i'm hoping to have a good rod/piston combo and go 10:1 with compression and next year piece together a turbo setup. As soon as the car is put to Texas tho I was cpnsidering running a 50 or 75 wetshot on it just to have some fun with the stock motor. So with my goals (assuming nothing falls through) the head would only be on a stock block for maybe 8/9 months (year worse case). And with me possibly spraying once the cars out here if the head would allot me to get furthr gains out of it then I may just run it. I originally intended keeping it aside until more started comming together but I became curious. That's why I made this thread haha. But if it'll end up just being overkill then I would see no reason to put it on the motor so soon. But if this head mixed with a 50/75shot wohld likely produce a noticable gain that may be worth running it then i'll do it

I'd slap it on in a heartbeat. 258 duration with 394 lift? Not as aggressive as Crower 3's and I'd run Crower 3's on the street (especially with MS). Really can't see the reason why not. You're not going to hurt anything (maybe a little low end and a rougher idle - you said you liked that anyway). You will see gains. Its not like there is a small, limited shelf life on a head. You should get at least 80k out of the head. And with MS you will have the ability to use the potential of the cams, instead of just fighting the stock ecu.

Thanks alot Bullet! Pretty much heard what I wanted to from Dave and yourself. Would that head be suitable from nitrous? Or would the stock block be something to worry about more then the head?

Weak point is pistons.
