Hey guys I've been looking around the forum for about 3 hrs now and some people seem to have almost the same problem with their non turbo Eclipse as me but its different somewhere along the story. So if I can get some kinda help that would be great! I bought this car off some guy who tried to make it "fast and furious" and totally abused the hell out of this car. I don't wanna just dump her off to someone else. Ive put a lot of time and money trying to do the best I can to make her look stock and bring her back to life.

1996 Automatic non turbo 2.0 eclipse GS

So the car starts up well. As it idles it has an odd surge and for a split second the rpms drop and the car sounds like its gonna stall but it doesnt. After the car reaches running temperatures and is driven around for about 30 mins the engine will shut off and all the lights on the dash turn on. It is very hard to get the car started after that. I usually have to wait a day or so for it to start again.

there is no check engine light on.

I replaced the fuel filter, put new gas in it, did an oil change, changed the spark plugs, changed the valve cover gaskets(they were leaking), tested the battery and all those checked out to be fine. I just bought a new Cam angle sensor and throttle position sensor because someone told me those were the problem but I havent installed them yet but those dont seem like they would cause the car to shut off while driving, especially after driving for 30 mins.

has anyone else had this exact problem with their car? I could really use the help! I start school very soon and dont have a way to get there now.

Check the harness that runs by the EGR valve pipe. You probably have a rub apot on it and it grounds out on the EGR tube when moving.

I had a similar problem. I took the harness out from egr all around to the ac. I checked it all and put it together and bingo it works. Mine seems to be a loose connection somewhere but you can try it. i took the wires out of the loom and reloomed some. It is only a band-aid but it helped me. Worked for a month now.

There is a connector on the thermostat housing for the coolant temperature sensor. Check for corrosion or cracks on the connector and sensor itself. Damage there can cause this problem.

Intermittent no start can also be caused by the crank sensor failing.

mine did the same thing..crank sensor....

Crank sensor, I don't think a cam sensor would act like that. And the car... -will- run without the tps plugged in so I think that's out of the question.

Mine was the crank sensor also. This happened after the car was only a week old when I bought it brand spanking new with 11 miles on it.
