Ok, first off I'm new here so please don't be harsh on me posting this dumb thing... But I just picked up my first eclipse today 9/30. I drove it home from blairsville pa to butler pa (my home, ruffly 1hr drive 60miles) around town in blairsville the car ran ruff but fine, then it seemed to run only in 1st gear, I drove it the whole way home in first gear... Then when I shut off the car let it set then drove it again it went threw all the gears like it should (still runs ruff at idle/stops)... So I kinda don't know whats up...is there a sensor that could do that... The check light is on, but autozone says it's a faulty colent temp sensor... The car is a 95 GS automatic, with a cold air intake, and a mid to long tube aftermarket header

Being stuck in 2nd gear is an issue. It's called limp mode. So you can limp it home. Check the transmission fluid and verify that the level is OK. The coolant temp sensor is located on the filler neck for the coolant. It is the sensor with two wires going to it. Make sure it is plugged in and there is no corrosion on the plug.

The fluid is fine, a nice red color, no metal shaveings, it has ruffly 148,945k but I'm use to my old 95 SOHC atx neon, which I trade for this car. I did a visual of it (at 8pm) saw no issues, but I'll look tomorrow during better daylight

^^Fix this first. Not that it is causing the problem BUT I have seen these do all kind of wacky things. You talk about letting it sit and then it working properly and limpy mode and running "ruff" (= rough) and all.

I want to see that sensor fixed first.

So, there could be a slight possibility that it could be the problem, but I guess I won't know till I mess with it

Ok it's been raining since I've got this car so since I don't have shelter available to pull it under and start familiarizing myself with what's under the hood. But I came to realize that if I baby the thing like grandma then it'll shift "alright" but it still idles "rough" I'm thinking it could possibly be a worn motor mount, it shimmies also applying the brakes going around a left turn, I think may be alignment or brake related, but these are just what I think, once this rain lets up then I'll drive it up on my ramps and give it a more in depth look over... Oh to add on the transmition it seems like it dosent want to down shift smoothly... Is there sappost to be another cable some where on the tranny? My neon had the shift lever cable and a throttle pressure cable, if my throttle pressure cable was disconnected or in need of adjustment then the tranny would act the same as what my eclipse is doing... Idano like i said new to eclipse, but very igure to learn... ((sorry about spelling))
