134979, Head Build/Valve Question Posted by 99BeaterGS, Sep-07-11 11:43 AM
Still researching my 420A-T build. Ive noticed SuperTech Valves and Springs are very nicely built and probably will last. Thing is do i really need to upgrade to them or can i go alittle cheaper???
Reason being its going to cost me about 5 to 600 bucks for those things.
Now im doing o complete build. pistons rods mild cams and probably going to do a 20G Turbo.

A Set of Crower springs is like 100 bucks and a set of PEP +1mm stainless valves is like 175ish.
I wouldnt spend 5-600 on valves and springs. Much better areas to relocate.
In all reality if you are not going for crazy amounts of HP, just use the stock valves with Crower springs.

you can upgrade to 4g63 springs. they're stronger than our stock ones. But im not too sure if you can use them with aftermarket cams. im sure some one can correct me lol

What about the ones from bruce over at parts dino.
If you said stock ones will work then the ones from EngineTech he sells would be fine. correct?

Should be. But where are your valves now? Just have the machine shop check them and replace as necessary (if at all).

Well i have a completly bare head (valve guides are still in thats it) the guy bought a RS with a blown motor for a parts car. I bought the block, head and trans from him. The OD said 120k miles on it but apparently that was 4 years ago when the OD stopped working so im guessing its got close if not 200k miles on it so IMO i would like to replace all internals because the motor broke a timing belt and one rod was snapped and 2 valves were broke.

The head on my stock motor with the 16's dropped a valve. Machine shop checked all of the valves, replaced three that were bad.
Couldnt even tell once it was all hot tanked and had a valve job.
I would let them check the valves.

Ok.
If you are replacing them with stock valves (which there is no reason to go upgraded with your goals) then take the ones up to the machine shop that were there.
Lets say 10 are still true, then you save like 80 bucks.

Exactly!
Like I said, the head I have on my other motor dropped a valve and skipped time before punching a hole in the block.
Took the head, valves, springs and all to the machine shop, and they only needed to replace 3 valves. So instead of like 130 bucks, it was 20 :)

FYI, hahn's record breaking RS motor had stock valves and made 550whp. I run stock valves, highest WHP i made was 300 but was untuned
