Why do you want to swap engines?

134655, RE: Which engine? Posted by Axis, Jul-26-11 04:05 PM
I want to add more power to my car and mayber make it a stick shift

You can swap in any engine with time, money, and discipline.

I say next time research a car before you buy it, no DSM that I know of has an 'easy' swap. No one that I know of really tries to swap engines (except for the experimental 2.4 or possibly the 420a-4g63) but even then those are a lot of time and money. As Code4 said, anything can be done but by how it sounds to me, you wont find an answer you like. IMO your best bet is to swap in a nice already built 420a if you really are insisting on swapping =P.

The Evo motor and trans are the easiest to swap into our cars cause the timing belt sits on the same side as ours. Check ebay or search through the old threads on here. Some guy used to sell a $50 kit that would allow you to do the swap without any major headaches. Since your going the custom route might as well turn your 2g into a right hand drive. Someone was selling a diy kit for that also but it was a little more expensive. Good Luck and keep us posted. :thumbsup

Wait, I thought the evo motor was basically the 4g63 with a different head, and different internals! So wouldn't the timing belt be on the opposite side?!
- My advice, just build your engine if your looking for power! Since pretty much any swap is going to put you in debt haha, your better off spending about $2000 to fully build and turbocharge your motor!

TurbochrgdSpyder- To answer the EVO motor question. The 4th Gen Evo "96-98" I think, is where they turned the Engine around, Complete 180. To help relieve torquesteer & weight balance. Its always been a 4G63, but the 5th Gens "99'. Those are the Evo's that started receiving engine modification, such as Cam duration increase, piston's were lighter, and 560CC injectors were also added.
Now, to answer you're actual question, From what I've seen over the years, yes, it is just a "Vice Versa" Opposite side 4G63. With slight modifications. IMO it is just built opposite of the 4G63, everything is the same, just on opposite sides. HA! I think. Correct me if I'm WRONG!
OP, there are many swaps out there Discussed with the 2GNT, and honestly, well, most of them are never done right, nor completed. So if you really want to, start searching around about the 2.4 block/420A Head combo. That is a realistic goal that can still be achieved, and isn't too expensive.

or even better just buy my 2.4 turbo engine it's time tested , run, come with everything needed for a direct drop in a 95 (96 and up you swap your fuel rail and sensors)and you could brag about having a Hemi Orange engine

Its certainly a gain in power with the swap you so desire.

nah he's better with a Cobalt engine since it's a bolt-on job , if you could even find the bolts one day
on a serious note, without a turbo that engine was still a good upgrade compared to a stock 2.0 , compression is around 8.5:1 a little bit on the low side, but goodies like the 55mm tb, the UDP , the mild port head and the massive torque on the low end seriously help

by drilling a whole bunch of holes by welding a whole bunch of metal by cutting metal there , there and probably there too by doing lots and lots and lots of wirring in the car from front bumper all the way to the back bumper by ordering plenty of custom parts like 2 axles
if you like GM Ecotec so much go buy a Cobalt and figure how to swap the doors, hood, roof, bumpers, windows of your eclipse on the Cobalt it's probably easier than to try to put a GM engine in a DSM
seriously after 17 years since the introduction of the eclipse second generation in 1994 as a 1995 model year we pretty much know what is possible to do and we tried it years ago too and GM engines are on the list of "not possible to do unless you are incredibly stupid to try it and will probably fail anyway at it after spending thousands of $ "
the only thing I have yet to see in a 2G is a 6A13TT swap from a JDM Galant VR4 and that would be a really REALLY hardcore swap for experts
