134520, Procharging a 420A.. Posted by 740 turbo brick, Jul-02-11 11:49 PM
Im working on my car tonight, and often times I look around the engine bay and wonder. Has anyone pondered supercharging (with a procharger) a 420A? This is what I see in my mind:
Remove the power steering pump, and if neccesary the A/C Make a bracket to mount the procharger in line with the PS belt Clock the prochargers opening straight down Make some modifications to fit piping and a front mount intercooler Cool side piping comes up through either the CAI route or the fuse box hole Viola, boost.
As far as I know, prochargers need no cooling or lubrication (possibly sealed lube case), this seems like it would be fairly straight forward. Any thoughts on this?

IF I ever get around to doing this, that is the spot I have planned for it. BUT I would only be doing it for the novelty. Its really not that effective of a use of money and time for the small amount of power added (says the man who spent thousands on NA power, lol)

and for your birthday I can buy you a nitrous system to help ya run away from the NA scene even quicker =P.

Right, I know they dont add as much boost or power as you could get with a turbo, but like you said its just the fact of doing it. Ive honestly never seen a Supercharged 420A in any capacity. I once saw a sketchy kit comprised of a pontiac 3.8 supercharger and an adapter to fit it to our lower runner portion of the manifold, but no proof that it worked or that anyone bought it. It would just be the fact that you pop your hood at a show or out with your buddies, and possibly have one of the worlds only procharged 420s. It also seems like it would be a cheaper and easier way for boost, depending on how much the charger itself costs you.

Crap, does that mean you're not getting me one?
Closest thing I can find toward someone actually doing this with credibility;
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/420a-bolt-tech/170101-supercharged-420a-talon-ii.html
Plenty of "I know a guy", "I heard about a guy", "there are a couple out there" etc. But this was the one that was the most specific.
The next best was "the guy" who did this and threw a lot of belts.

Very nice. The top pic is exactly what I imagined but without the driveshaft, the procharger directly in its place. Looking at the size it either wouldnt fit or would be a tight squeeze with both AC and PS gone. Like the bolt on kit too.

The lower one looks like the McKnight kit. The upper one I thought there were questions whether or not that one even worked.

I will say that is an interesting solution to the problem of location/placement for the lower kit, and it is good to see the pic of how the belt with some extra pulleys will all line up but how will that hold up is the question. There is obviously no possibility of using an intercooler with this setup. The advantage I see compared to the other setup is everything else (PS/AC) remains in place.
As for the other one, you have to lose the PS pump, IDK about the AC it looks like it could stay, but then you also have this spinning shaft sitting in front of the engine. How are the bearings for that shaft lubricated? It looks like it may be possible to intercool it but it doesn't look like it from the pic unless the piping is really crammed in there.
In regards to tuning, I'm sure either can be figured out without much problem (as long as you don't ask me to do it!)
As we know, turboing would be easier and more effective, I'd say simply for the sake of packaging more than anything else!
However, I do appreciate trying something like this to be different. Too bad it might not be very cost effective.
