133435, 3 Years and Counting and It's Finally Coming Together
Posted by Wes Tank, Mar-22-11 09:28 AM
Don't really post on this forum too much. I have had this car since mid 2004 so it's been with me for a long time. Mainly just hang around my local site www.widsm.org

Finally getting my 2g together. Here are some pics of the engine. More updates and pics to come as stuff gets done.

The big mistake:Howell 2.2 stroker. Loooong story behind actually recieving it. Knew it was a gamble going with them initially because of time frame issues but went with them anyway. Probably could've chiseled a stroker kit out of iron ore in the time it took to get the engine. Even in the end, all they did was send me the parts instead of a built short block. :/

Head work:
extensive porting
crower stage II cams
HKS cam gears
crower springs and retainers
Valve job
Ferrea stainless valves

New everything from the dealer on the timing side.

Before

After

Ported intake manifold

Cometic head gasket and ARP hardware.

Almost all together

Looks good.

However, I did not know HKS ever made gears for us or Neons :shrug

Your guess is as good as mine. It was part of the 'deal' that I worked out with Howell. They just started sending me a bunch of free parts in place of the time they robbed from me and not sending an actual short block.

No timing belt cover?
133442, RE: 3 Years and Counting and It's Finally Coming Together
Posted by Wes Tank, Mar-22-11 10:56 AM
Timing belt is back off. Forgot about it. Then went to go find it and forgot that I broke it years ago when I initially took it off. In the process of locating one now. Also waiting for trans to get rebuilt also.

Nice looking build dude!

I also made the mistake of going with Howell way back when and not only did it take forever, he initially didnt send me everything I had agreed to.

To his defense, after a light year and many calls and emails, he did eventually provide me with everything, and even threw in a free Howell Automotive Tshirt..haha!
133452, RE: 3 Years and Counting and It's Finally Coming Together
Posted by Wes Tank, Mar-22-11 03:30 PM
Yeah my original order date was March of 2008 if I remember right. Ordered an assembled stroker short block. Finally got all the parts, yes just parts, last Sept. This was after many many many phone calls and emails directly with the owner and a BBB filed complaint against the company.

All in all, it took 2.5 years to get the parts for a stroker block, and not even an assembled stroker block.

Free stuff that I received:
AF/X Ecu
Cam gears
660cc Accel injectors
PT Cruiser lifters
Some bullshit melling timing belt
Gasket set
I think that's it.

I have never heard of such terrible customer service in my life, that sucks man, at least its coming together. Looks nice, just glad I know to stay away from Howell now.

OP Where in WI are you? I'm in Milwaukee.

I'm on the north side of milwaukee. All my stuff is at my shop out in Germantown though.

Posted by Ebster1085, Mar-28-11 09:47 AM
Howell told me I would have my motor in 6-12 weeks. Took them 12 months to get me everything. Keep in mind I also had to fight with Gary on the phone and threaten a credit dispute in order to get the stainless valves and timing kit that was promised to me.

Absolutely pitiful customer service.
133527, RE: 3 Years and Counting and It's Finally Coming Together
Posted by 2ndGen-ElTalon, Mar-28-11 10:08 AM
Wow Damn, That is just terrible time to wait, I mean you would think someone who's paying you thousands would have the customer service and common decency to get you everything you paid for, ON TIME.

Forget them, I won't ever browse their site again.

NS eh, thats about the same area I'm at, 92nd and Hampton or 92nd and North, I stay at both.

When I get my 2GNT back up and running we'll have to meet up, so I can see this beast in person!!!

Nice. My day job is parts counter at NAPA on 127th and Hampton in Butler so stop by if you need parts and I'll give you the DSM discount.

Ok......back on topic!

I Didn't know HKS made cam gears for a 420a?

Other than that, GREAT BUILD!

Posted by Wes Tank, Mar-28-11 11:26 AM
**EDIT**

Just looked at the cam gears and they are Fidanza. Tried installing them and one of the gears the pitch was off so the timing belt didn't mesh with it well so I just went back to the stock gears.

The Napa on Hampton in Butler, nice, thats where I get my AMSOIL trans fluid, great stuff too.

We'll I was over in the area there yesterday, Maybe again today, I'll have to stop in and meet you.

nice, ?, you stil plan on using the hyrdo tensioneR? idk, i am an advocate for the mech one.. my hrydro went bad at 3000 miles.. got it brand new, then noticed care was idling funny, noticed sever slack in the belt one after noon// pulled the hrydro tensioner and oil everywhere.. thing was shot, lucky i didn't loose my valves to the pistons..idk, food for thought i guess, i know theres alot of mixed bag about it.. but to me theres a reason they phased it out..

I hate shoddy businesses...good luck with your build, looking great so far.

Should vent it to atmosphere }(

Prob vent first but eventually route it back to the exhaust because I don't want it rediculously loud.

Here's a little update since I'm bored standing at the computer till noon today.

Got my compressor housing and piping powder coated gloss black. Came out quite nice I must say.

Noticed the cruise control box cover plate was larger and covered more on a 99 GS I currently own so I swapped those as well.

Also finally mounted my door caps for my sideskirts on since I've been kicking them around my shop for the last 6 years or so.
