133027, 2.4 EDZ crank scraper options
Posted by streetlightning, Jan-26-11 02:45 PM
I know Ishihara Jhonson makes a crank scraper and windage tray for the 2.4, my concern was, im using an srt4 oil pump (i dont think it matters to the crank scraper/tray) and a 420a pick up tube. the tube is where im not sure if their scraper and tray will work. any have advice/knowlege? Balance shaft chain/assymbly is removed. using a custom pan as well. I plan on purchasing one, just wanted to make sure it would work before i purchase it. thx

Do you know for sure that the 420a pickup tube will bolt correctly to the SRT4 oil pump? Orient correctly? Have you test fitted it? It is unlikely that it will be at the proper depth and location in the SRT4 oil pan.

The OEM SRT4 oil pan gasket has "finger" for lack of better description that scrape the crankshaft counterweights. Maybe that will suit well enough for your application. If you are set on the IJ assembly, you will either need to modify/cut/weld the 420a pickup tube to work correctly, or just go with the SRT4 pickup tube.

Based on the topic, are you looking for options for a crank scraper or a pickup tube? What are you asking?

sorry, options on crank scraper. as for the tube, ill have to look tonight, Terry rigged it up, so im not sure if he what he did to make it work, but i do know for sure its an srt4 pump and a 420a tube, he designed the pan he made around using the 420a pick up tube. ill grab some pix tonight

Since you have a custom pan and pickup tube you are severely limited on a tray/scraper then. IJ is not going to be able to provide you one with a custom pan, unless you send the pan to them for product fabrication.

In the future, specify custom fabricated parts you are working with - you cannot assume that people know exactly what you have and offer advice.

good calL. The pan is custom, but mating flange is the same as the stock 2.4 block, IE it has the same "saw blade" shape on the inside so the oil has les resistance when draining down the block. it runs the stock gasket, and i think the only real difference in this pan vs a hacked up srt pan , is the pick up tube to bottom depth. that dimension is 420a based, where the rest is stock pan based. Im not sure how much distance the IJ needs to be from pan, or how exactly the measure it, IE, dist from bottom of pan, or from bottom of block. I thought (and could be wrong) that the tray was attached to the scraper which replaces the stock gasket, then the tray hangs down ~ an 1"? If so , then i guess i dont see why i couldnt use a Scraper/tray combo?

heres a link to the pan

To be clear, you are only interested in the crank scraper and windage tray, not the oil pan baffling, correct? There are three distinct parts you can have. I have the the 3 part assembly from IJ and it takes up all the available room inside an unmodified SRT4 oil pan. Since your pan is cut & modified, the IJ assembly would not fit if you ordered the assembly with the baffle. With only the tray & scraper, it might fit but it all depends on how heavily the oil pan steps up toward the bell housing.

It's close enough for government work.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I do in fact run a 2.0L oil pump pickup on my 2.4, with a modified SRT4 pan. I "adjusted" it slightly with a hammer, but it fits fine and is probably less than 1/2" away from the bottom of the pan.

refering to the "government work" and the current administration lol. nice. im in contact with kevin, from IJ, and i think were trying to figure something out. we think we would need to mod the windage tray, remove some material for the PU tube. going by what dark one said, i prolly cant run the Trippe set up, b/c the bottom trap doors simply wont fit? ie it would hit the bottom of the pan. correct?

from IJ

"I checked an old setup and the pickup curve is just about even
(touches) the bottom tray. You want it NOT to touch so I will delete the grating in that area. You will need to put some Prussian blue indicating grease on the tube and grind a hole in that bottom tray until you have at least a couple mm clearance all around."

Or you could just not run a windage tray. I don't.

ok, so , on my 420a, my worry was starving it of oil on a turn, i thought technially, its almost the same dam engine, is that fear still valid , baring that the correct amount of oil is in the pan of course..
so this is where we weigh the 350 bones to have this part, vs its actual worth in functionality.. so i guess, are you saying its benefits are not worth it?

i plan to dd in the summer and take it to the strip as well.. it would be nice making right turns without worrying lol

If you keep oil in it, it's not an issue. The modified SRT pan, or the custom pan you got from Terry, both hold a shitton of oil.

Doesn't IJ make a scraper without the windage tray?

ahh ok. i was talking with kevin from IJ, and they can make one, would be basically a modified 2.4 scraper and windage tray, so it would not come with the little trap doors.

looks CODE 4 already stated that lol, but i must have missed his post.
the slope on the pan by the bell housing is about the same as a 420a Pan. so i guess, im not quite sure if by loosing the baffles (which i have too) do i loose a large amount of functionality from the scraper/tray setup?
