13243, Throttle Body Diameter - ONCE AND FOR ALL!!! Posted by trwebb26, Jan-29-02 02:32 PM
OK... There should be no argument about these pics:
Throttle Body Inlet (from Air Filter) Size is 55mm:

Throttle Body Necks down to 46mm before the Throttle Plate:

The throttle body bolts up to the intake manifold at 52mm diameter:

I hope this clears things up for a few people!

Hey did you take those pics?? If so can I borrow that TB for a few weeks?? LOL

Guess you're right. I was always under the impression is was 54mm or so on either end and 52 or so inside.
Consider me corrected.

It's all good... just tryin' to help out. :)
If somebody wants these pics for the 2gnt site - go ahead and take them. They would be good for the "Stages" section to give some detail to that throttle body upgrade.

So the Howell bored TB is 55mm straight through, inner diameter included?
I hope those pics are of a stock TB. Makes the Howell TB look good.

You cant measure accurately to the mm with a ruler. Thats like measuring your cyl bore with a tape measure (how can you even be sure your measuring from center. If the ruler is up or down a mm off your reading is off). I'll bet all your cars its 52mm inner diameter at the opening. what it tapers too I dont know but I do know it would take a feeler gauge to read accuratelty. Howells TB is machined down at the lip also (its thinner there) not just straight back from the widest point.

If you really need to know what the inside diameter of the throttle body is... I can give it to the metrology engineer in the quality assurance department to measure it... I'll get inner diameter, circularity, cylindricity, and circular runout... How does that sound?
I wasn't trying to get the fucker down to the micron - People were arguing about millimeters. Give me a fuckin' break... I'm just trying to help out.
So I guess to clarify for Stan:
I measured the inner-most diameter of the stock 420A throttle body to be 46mm plus or minus 1mm.

It's close enough for me.
Would you really do that? That'd be cool as shit.. even is it is just for the geek in me :-D
All i know for a fact, in all exactness - stock is stock, and AFX bored is 55mm all the way through (and if you relocated that stupidly placed vaccuum line to the EVAP can and fill the air path with metal, you can bore that sucker out HUGE!) ;-)

> >I wasn't trying to get the fucker down to the micron -
I'd like it to be to the mm since we are ONLY talking mms and next week someone will be posting chryslers info is wrong and howells a liar. You may have gotten down to a micron by luck and I'm there may be some variations from TB to TB but if something aint valid I'm gonna say so. If your gonna put something like "ONCE AND FOR ALL" in caps its not unreasonable to expect accuracy.
>People were arguing about millimeters.
We arent arguing. If I think its wrong I'm gonna say so wether its you, jaun, darkone or jason or my mother, Wether its TB size, turbo kits or kill stories.
Give me a fuckin' >break...
Have a beer
>I'm just trying to help out.
Me too.

I can't believe thay only make a 55mm tb for our cars. Honda's get 60 or even 68mm.WTF? we have larger displacement and they get a bigger TB? How the hell does are engine breath through that straw?

Well with a different or custom manifold and TB it "could" be done.
BTW, nice picture at Route 66!

It was from b4 I bought the car. I bought the car right after this show. Mike do you know if thier is a way to make the opening in the manifold bigger. I don't mean the one were the tb bolts onto. right after that its a tight squeeze then the manifold opens up. Does that make any sense?x(

Because of the bottleneck right aftfer the flare for the TB to bolt on the most I can only see a few mm being ganed... probably not more than 5mm (high estimate, probably not even get that)
