I have no idea how I got started with this idea (probably ADD), but here it goes. I started going through pics of EGR systems (just for shits and giggles)on other cars from various manufacturers and I noticed something. All the setups had the EGR system mounted near or right at the intake manifold, with an EGR tube leading from the exhaust. This is exactly opposite from our setup. I'm a little interested to see if making a setup similar to other cars would benefit our engines. Would a setup like that on other cars allow use of aftermarket cams without melting anything from an exessively open EGR valve? I'm not sure how correct my thinking is, but wouldn't a setup that has the EGR valve further away from the exhaust allow the exhaust gasses to cool enough to not cause harm to the valve or wiring? I'm curious about this and before I start prototyping something, I'd like any imput possible. If this has been tried by someone else with no success, please let me know. Sorry for the rant.

Blocking off the EGR is a hell of a lot easier and better.

I realize this, but I still have to get my car checked every year and I have an OBD1 car. Plus, I'd like to see if this would help people with cams that need to still have their cars inspected. Plus, it's really not that difficult, just time consuming. I'm more interested in the outcome and potential.

in most states, if you do any aftermarket mods on a car you are able to get hobbyist plates and then it doesnt need to pass emmisions

That is patently incorrect.

I'm not sure why you think this will make any difference whatsoever.

My thinking is that the further away the EGR valve is from the exhaust, the cooler the exhaust gas. Not by much, but maybe enough to keep stuff from melting.

I just got thinking about it hearing other car guys being able to run cams while maintaining their EGR system. Made me that wondering if our setup was more like the other ones, we`d have no problems as well. Plus, I like a challenge. :P

You do realize that the valve isn't what's creating the heat, right?

as stated, the valve is most certainly not creating the heat in the piping, therefore the location of it doesnt matter.

however your plan is requiring an EGR cooler, similar to a commercial diesel application. encasing the egr tube in a larger tube then running engine coolant through the larger tube may get you to your goal... it also may not im not certain, however this is what we do on diesels... works well there.

I know the valve gets hot from the exhaust. My thinking is that if I re-route everything the way other cars have it, the exhaust gasses in the tube may be cooled enough to not melt anything. Sketching some other ideas that may help with my idea.

The problems are from the heated gasses heating the egr tube. Any vehicle regardless of Valve location will melt shit around that tube. Perhaps you should pay more attention to how other makes dont have any electrical laying on the EGR tube

They all have wiring around the EGR tube. Only difference is that the wiring is at the intake manifold. The EGR tube actually starts on the exhaust manifold, so the pipe is quite long. That`s what made me think that perhaps the exhaust gasses would be slightly cooler. Again, I`m just throwing ideas around, not saying what I think is the absolute truth. I want to cam my car, but smog testing is hindering me from pursuing it, since the retards here can barely test cars here unless they`re OBD2.

I`m just trying to think outside of the box. Instead of trying to fool the ECU into thinking everything is fine, why not fab up a design that will work with mods and not catch our cars on fire?

Another idea I`ve been toying with that`s ALOT cheaper is introducing more vacuum by something like a boost pill that`s used on Evo X`s to increase boost at low rpm`s. I know that would keep the EGR from opening at idle, preventing everything from getting too hot, but what about low throttle conditions. would this cause the CEL to turn on or could it possibly fool the ECU into thinking everything is fine?
