131259, Newest record NA Dyno Dynamics

Hey I haven't posted up a dyno thread in a bit so I thought I would post up the most recent. Also, this was a comparison dyno between my buddy Mario's head and Mike's head (AMM).

Background; Mario is one of those secret port guys. He gets heads sent to him from all over the country (at his choice to do them or not). He has had multiple occasions to go "head to head" (no pun intended) against "well-known" companies and has come out on top pretty much every time. He is heavy on Honda's and 4G63's. But he wanted to do a head for me, so he took on his first 420a head (he also did my turbo port). His numbers on my current set-up; 218.0whp at 175tq

Unfortunately, for some reason, one of the seats in his head decided to take a walk down the exhaust - and fucked up his head.

So that gave me the opportunity to try one of Mike's heads. He was told up front that it would be used in direct comparison with Mario's head. Same set-up, same dyno, same tuner just different head.

Well, as it turns out, I did not give Mike a fair shake on this. When I broke down the engine, I knew I would probably be replacing that piston and valves (which I did), but I thought I would have a relative clean cylinder wall to work with. Well that wasn't entirely true. There were a couple of dents in the side of the wall, up high. As I looked at them I talked myself into believing they were above the ring line (basically because I didn't have the time, or the want, to have to bore out another block and rebuild the bottom end. Just for an engine that I am not holding onto that long - remember I'm more interested in the 16 to 1 but I need something to race). Well of course the dent was below the line.

With the backpressure that was built up in the block, I pissed all over Matt's dyno, lol. Out of the oil pan, the cam sensor, the catch can etc. So I'm thinking the cylinder may have been a bit low on compression (oops).

But both of us said fuck it. It was my engine that would blow up and his dyno that would get gooey, so what the hell. Let's push through.

So push through we did. The head took immediate fuel (a good sign). So the first few pulls works us up to around 206whp and I was getting skeptical on Mike's head beating out Mario's. But then the next was 215whp and, well, the next 2 pulls are here;

Surpassing Mario's old mark with the anticipation of more. But it was not to be. Dyno's don't give it up that easy. If you look at the blip at just before 6300 you can see the gremlins kicking in. We got a sudden misfire. It got progressively worse. After doing some quick checking and changing etc. it turned out to be a blip in the tach feed to MSnS. She was done for the day (and now I gotta search out where the tach drop is before the Shoot Out :wallbash).

So here's the car with low comp in one cylinder and bad spark still hitting a new record of 219.4whp@165tq. I'm figuring Mike's head is the winner.

Couple of funny things though; Mike's head was very smooth down low (where I could care less, but anyway). It is almost like I could take this engine and stick it in my daily and drive it on the street. And for some reason, the torque number is lower than Mario's head (165 vs 175) though the curve comes up a little quicker and extends a little longer. Funny strange stuff.

So crib notes; hit the dyno to compare head ports between Mario and AMM Mike. Despite poor comp in one cylinder and a tach feed misfire, Mike's head came out on top.

I cant wait to see what she puts down when she is running strong on all four! Solid numbers man, congrats!

Wow. Just goes to show you can always squeeze out more power. Youll hit the 220 WHP N/A mark here soon. Im hoping my next dyno checks out about 175...

Yeah, this is the part that pisses me off the most. I really wanted to see mid 220's. I'm thinking she's good for it. That would have been rather fun.

I'm hoping that your next 1/4 puts you in the 14's

Thanks for the postive responses guys.

As far as the bad comp engine goes, I took her out and took her apart Sunday morning. Just waiting on my machine shop to bore a block. So that should be no problem.

I'm just anxious about the break up. Reminds me of when my resistor broke down and slowly burnt up my injectors. That took like a year to figure out, lol.

Dude. 220whp... on a janky engine... with a sketchy tune.

That's b-a. I love this thread. I can only imagine what 16:1 will sound like (and do).

I'll be there and as long as my car gives me a good 2-3 runs without pulling out of 3rd I feel very confident that I will be in the 14's. Me and Colby need to do are runs side by side. Thats my promise to you, as long as you are running as well!

Im sorry to say I probably wont beat you to 14s. Im not even racing at the SO because Id be racing a 16 second car without my UDP. With UDP - 15.3. Without, 16.1. Unorthodox Racing said it wont be here until September. I was like "Is this Howell Automotive!? Damn"
