131192, Cheap "mod" for crisp shifting.
Posted by biggie16g, Jul-24-10 07:51 PM
Hey guys, So I was looking at my old shifter bushings and they were shot so I started looking for replacements. Sooo... I went on e-bay and ordered some solid shift bushings for 8 dollars and some change. They got here today, put them in, best under ten dollar "mod" I have ever done. I suggest you guys check them out.

Mmm, let me get this straight you installed solid bushings for a 2g 4g63 in a 420a shifter and it works. Nice, but I hope you aint posting to up your post count to sell in the market place.

If I'm wrong about the bushing and reasoning for your post, I apologize. I just got homw few hours ago, my brother traded his silver 1999 gs oz edition for a 2000 mtx Neon.Very tired, and thought I chime in when I noticed this, going to bed. Nite

Yeah. I've been looking at those for quite some time now to replace my worn ones in some shift cables that I will install for my AT to MT swap. I was skeptical about them because one the cheap price, second is that the description says for turbo cars, and third is rumors of metal clank noises when you shift especially with the ones you replace for the shifter assembly. Are you experiencing any of this at all with yours? If not, then I might pick up a set myself.

That plus the Symborski kit makes the shifter feel completely different. Its an old mod but worth every penny. The true Symborski kit actually comes with a rod as well that you don't get when you use skate board bearings.

Used roller blade bearings many times in both 4g63 and 420a. Basically a free mod (having upgraded my roller blade bearings).

Like Zac I upgraded both the cable bushings (with the same eBay ones posted above) as well as the shift plate bushings (Symborski) at the same time and it made a big difference in shift feel. Shifting was crisper, smoother, and had much less free play.

I did not notice any odd noises or annoying vibrations either, so I would recommend this mod to anyone.

Also, as an alternative to the Symborski kit, you can get Energy Suspension shifter plate bushings for around 12 shipped on eBay.

Tis what I have, along with the bushings up above.

That's the same setup that I was thinking to go with. Did you notice a big improvement over stock? Also which is better to go with for the shifter assembly bushings? Energy suspension or the Symborski kit?

It's a good sound, trust me. It's the sound that lets you know that you've made a successful shift.

Symborski shift kit FTW.

i got the Mach V Symborski shift kit and the 4g63 transmission shift boots as well. Both work very well on our 420a cars. Next thing up is to get a short throw shifter.

Most people i have read of enjoy the B&M SS, but for that price their asking to lose my business. Anyone know of the quality of the Megan Racing SS?

The B&M is a sweet piece. I say deal with the price and get it.
