131167, Here we go again..... Posted by irregular defect, Jul-21-10 08:05 PM
This all began about 2 weeks ago....Giving me trouble starting. Something the car has NEVER had a problem with. And then tonite, Went to go to a friends house, car didn't start on the first crank, started on the 2nd. Backed out of the driveway, went to the stop sign, turned the corner, went to accelerate and it died. Pulled off to the side, put it in park, cranked it....started right up. Let it idle for a few, continued on my way, got about 3 miles away from home, cruising about 50-55, low rpm's, and it died again. Pulled off on a side street. Waited for a few minutes while I called my friend and picked his brain real quick while I checked under the hood, made sure cam sensor was on, plug wires, coil plug, belts were tight. Everything looks good. Went to start it back up, fired for a few seconds then died right away, tried another 4 or 5 times, and then it started up. Managed to get it home....but now the "fun" begins.
Plugs and wires are less than 6 months old. No corrosion on the terminals. Battery is less than a year old, checked the volt meter when it died and it was normal too, so I don't think it's battery or alternator. Hearing the fuel pump prime too. Seems like it only happens when I'm at low or no throttle.
Fuel filter, Coil?
Thanks in advance. This isn't the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last that 2gnt helps me out.

Check ALL of your engine grounds. I had the exact same problem and turned out to be a loose ground on the firewall. Also, can you hear the pump cut on when it doesn't want to start? CEL on?

My CEL is always on, EGR delete.

+2 checking your grounds and clean your battery posts, if they're bad.
Also, check your starter switch cable thats the negative cable to the starter. Make sure you have the metal washer thats bolts that cable to the block which is ground for the starter.
I changed my starter in my 1997gs forgot to bolt that ground to the block, same thing happend plus at time would turn over. I used a flat head screw driver tapped the switch solenoid the would fire up. Then I notice this unbolted ground rebolted it and problem solved.

Mine gave me the same problems way back and it ended up being the crank sensor. Since it was still under warranty, the dealer diagnosed it and replaced it....never had a stalling issue since.

Drive it to your nearest autozone (if you can make it) and get the CEL read. Maybe you have some more codes in there other than the EGR delete, which if you just blocked off the valve and left the sensor hooked up with the vacuum line attached the CEL shouldn't be on for that.

I removed everything possible from the egr. So the plug is just there, hooked to nothing.
So, I took off the TB real quick, cleaned up the IAC some, put on a new TB gasket that I had and was meaning to put on (I cut one out of gasket material and had been using that for a while). Started it up, fired first try. Let it run for a minute, shut it off. Put the intake tube back on. Checked the ground on the starter, checked the plug and wires for the cam sensor, checked the plug and wires for the crank sensor....everything looks good. Started it back up, went for a quick 5 minute drive....everything is fine, never once got an inclination that it was going to die. But I don't know. Yesterday was the first time it died on me while driving, just been having intermittent trouble starting. Yesterday, all kinds of trouble and dying, today starts fine and drives perfect. dubya tee eff.

Congrats, but still take it to autozone and have it scanned.

X2. And hook your egr solenoid back up and if that's the reason the CEL was on it will go out when you disconnect your battery... as well as the radio memory.

Sounds like a crank sensor to me, mine ran perfectly but would die intermittently. No CEL for it. It took me about forever to hunt it down.

Noticed that people are claiming above that if you have EGR blockoff plates but keep the solenoid plugged in you will not get a CEL. Just letting you know, if you didn't already, that this is false. Even with the solenoid plugged in a CEL will still be triggered for EGR flow. The only time this will not be the case is for random 95's.
With the solenoid unplugged you will throw two CEL's related to the EGR system, but even with it plugged in, you will still throw one.
Make sure to check all the connections on your starter, particularly the ground line that connects to the tranny. Ensure that all these connects are clean and free of corrosion and that they are all properly tightened down. I have had starting issues related to this in the past.
