130865, weird sound... fuel pump? Posted by Fotowntalon, Jun-11-10 11:52 AM
So I of course know of the fuel pump prime. But when I am pushing my car (above 5000rpm) I get a whistling sound. If I let off the gas, the sound stops, but as soon as I press it again, the whistle is right there, the more I push it the louder it gets. It almost reminds me an airplane taking off, which while it is kind of cool, but I'm worried something is wrong, or going out.
I noticed this a while ago, but didn't really notice it until in 5th gear. It was much quieter and it only happened around 2500-3k rpm. Was weird cause if I had the car cruising in that rpm range I'd hear, it, but as soon as I accelerated it seemed to go away. This of course could have been to the exhaust drowning it out. Soo... any ideas? I've yet to have any problems beyond the noise and only thing I could think of is possibly my fuel pump is getting old and noisy.

are you sure its coming from the fuel pump? you can get a walbro for like 75$ on here so it isn't to expensive to change, and only takes like half an hour.
Another thing it could be, its doubtful but maybe some radio interference? I've had a similar noise to an airplane taking off from my stereo.

get someone else to drive while you ride shotgun and can really listen for where the sound is coming from.
Whistling tends to be a vacuum leak or radio interference from the alternator or ignition

First off, no I'm not sure its the fuel pump only thing I could think of. As for radio interference, I know its happened when I've had my faceplate off, and I only listen to CD's (actually removed my antenna a long time ago)so would this still even be a possibility. A vacuum leak does make sense. Sadly it will be a little while before i can ride shotgun, 95% of my buddy's who can drive stick are either a good 45mins+ away or work difficult hours. But I'll keep ya updated. And thanks for the responses. *edit* I also have a walbro 255 fuel pump laying around. Bought it about a year ago when I thought I was going to turbo, so if it does end up being that, at least I already have the part.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a month or so ago and I was convinced it was my Walbro. Turns out it was a vacuum leak that did not effect idle RPM, vac pressure, or anything else. I would only hear the whistle when I romped on it.
First two areas I would check are the intake manifold gasket and the throttle body gasket. My whistle turned out to be loose TB bolts. I simply tightened them up, and problem was solved.

found one of my vacuum caps was deteriorating very badly, gonna head to auto zone and buy some more, hopefully that will fix it, if not I'll further inspect for a vacuum leak

I'd bet that was it.

It quieted it down a lot, so its about to the same point it was a couple months ago. I'm going to inspect it further tomorrow, to see if i can completely get rid of it, and if i can't at least its bearable.

My car does the same thing. In my instance its my alternator belt. You can get a small whistle from an aftermarket intake also, just a thought.
