130292, Rebuilt motor does not run, wrong cam? Posted by Raider26, Apr-03-10 10:56 PM
I am having trouble getting my rebuilt 420a nt engine running. It wants to backfire through the intake when turning over. I have replaced the cam and crank sensors. I have spark and the cam marks on the cam gears are lined up correctly. What it looks like to me is when the motor is a tdc, and the cam marks are lined up the cam lobes are to close to the same position. Can you tell me if the cam lobes on the intake and exhaust are only a few degrees apart? I have a picture but don't know how to attach it.

Um.. Your links are dead...Not active...Load them to a hosting site for pictures as in Photobucket or so. Also It's not in your cams....Almost positive.

Sounds like your cams are 180* out. Remember that your cams rotate once for every 2 rotations of the crank. Try rotating them 180*, reset timing and try again
Every time I put a 420a back together I get it wrong and have to rotate the cams and retime the engine. I don't even bother putting on the passenger mount before trying to fire the engine

Well the motor is a rebuild from overbore.com, not my original. The question I have is why are the timing marks correct on the cam gears if the cams are 180 out? could the cam gears be on the wrong cams? Thanks for all the help guys, this thing has been giving me problems trying to figure this out for the last two weeks and Mark at overbore does not seem to want to help me.

Apparently, you just skipped over my post. Look at the peak of the cam lobe on the cams you have and the peak of the cam lobe on the stockers I took a picture of. do you see any problem with the angle from the "TDC hole"?
Here do this, send Mark the picture you posted and then send him the pictures I posted and tell him, "Mark Bullett says to send me the right cams for a MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE 420a."

Thanks bullett, I do see the difference in the two pictures, hopefully I can get Mark to send me the correct set of cams.

If one were to have two intake/exhaust cams in the head, wouldn't that appear the same way? Of course, Having one 2GNT cam and one Neon cam might be the same thing.
Been there. Done that. Hated it.
