Does it look like I need to rehone the block? There were JE 8.8:1 .020 over pistons in the block for 2,000 miles, then the guy put 10.5:1 .020 pistons in it for 2,000 more miles. I recently bought it and wanted to put the same JE 8.8:1 .020 pistons back in it. New rings and all. Pistons are good to go as far as size and bore. I'm just wondering about the rings seating correctly. Here's pics of the cylinders going in order 1,2,3,4 then 4,3,2,1 on a reverse angle.

ALWAYS rehone. I'm not saying you have to send it to the machinist but at the very least run a ball hone through it. To many possible problems can arise if you don't. I dont know the condition of your cylinders because for some reason the pictures you posted wont come up on my computer, but ALWAYS rehone.

Do, I need to take out the crank? Or can I lay something in the bottom on top of the crank to catch the particles?

crank needs to come out. You need to rehone it, you never ever set a new set of rings in an old cylinder. they wont break in as well as they could.

You will then need ot wash the block out and I recommend you Mike the cylinders to see how much you removed by Honing. Just honing alone can remove 2-3 thousandths.

Ball hone or Straight hone is fine. They both do the same
