12973, now she sputters
Posted by vegasdsmr, Jan-26-02 01:08 PM
i dunno wtf is goin on, i leak oil, check compression, fix leak, and now she dont respond like she used to.

she idles fine, until i rev her above 3500. car vibrates much more now (have nrg mm inserts for awhile). i took her out, and like 2 blocks away, first time i shifted into second, and she cut off on me. i limped home, sputterin like a broken lawnmower.

im gunna check the spark plugs....

any ideas...

the only sensors/electrical stuff i messed with is the relays that i disconnected to the the compression test and the neg terminal to reset the ecu.

well, i took off the old spark plugs, and they were gapped to .053,and one was at .048.

i put in new plugs, ngkbkr5e11 gapped to .043 and she still sputters.

i have gotten no CEL, so im not sure if any sensors are messed up, it could be mechanical.

at idle, i get a lot more vibration, kinda like every other stroke ofthe engine is cuasin the vibration.

sounds like the gas then if the plugs are fine, what about the fuel filter? how long has that been in there...? what about the fuel pump?

Out of curiousity did you leave the plug wires connected to the coil pack when you were turning her over? i did and after that i had an overly rich problem cause i think i shot one or so and w/ gaps like that and faulty wires that could happen. i dunno if you have stocker wires or performance. so check those.

yeah, i left em on the coil pack(DOH).

i just swapped the magnacores with my old stockers, and she idles smoothly. i didnt take her for a spin cut she is ticking/knocking pretty loud from the valve cover area.

the saga continues

The ticking from under the VC is probably your lifters. Mine ticks sometimes and it seems to be pretty common with the 420a. If it is your lifters, you have nothing to worry about. You can upgrade to the PT Cruiser ones for like $100 from howell if you want to.

You DO check your oil level regularly I hope... we don't need any more spun bearings around here!

well, the regular sound of the injectors or lifters tickin i have become familiar with.
this sound is a lot more distinct and is much louder than the normal engine noise. the ticks/knocks get faster as teh rpms increase.

i havent taken her past 3000 rpms, or out of the garage, so i dont know what will happen under normal driving conditions.

oil and filter get changed every 3-4 thousand miles.

i just added 1/2 qt. about 50miles ago when i noticed i leaked sum onto my garage floor. no more leaks.

thanks for all the help, and it is appreciated.

Take off your valvecover and check the lifters for problems. I had problems like that and it turned out I had a broken lifter.
