129503, Coolant appears to be leaking from a manifold bolt?
Posted by 95_ESi_Person, Feb-01-10 08:36 PM
As some of you know, I have recently brought this Eclipse back to life after it overheated and the previous owners gave up on it after the quote Mitsubishi gave them.

I ran it tonight and noticed coolant welling up on a bolt head on the lower half of the exhaust manifold (below the driver most side of the hose connected to the thermostat housing), number 2 cylinder.

I saw a small drip from that hose, so I tightened the clamp, dried it off, and the bolt looked like it was still welling up with coolant and burning off. No more signs of the leak from the hose.

Housing and surrounding areas appear dry, along with the headgasket area.

Any ideas on what could be happening? Are there any cooling jackets running by this manifold bolt?

The main radiator hose and heater hose that runs above the manifold look fine and leak free?

If it is not one of the above, I have no idea.

Only way it could be coming from the bolt hole itself is if someone drilled it out into the water jacket to helicoil or similar, or if the head is cracked through that bolt hole.

I'd be more willing to bet it's just leakage from above, but if you want to make sure... pull the bolt and start the car :D

Thanks Dino and Ebster.

I have corrected the hose leak, and will double check tonight.... Pull the bolt out and start it up... I'm hoping it was just leftover from the hose, but the drip pattern didn't hit the bolt.

I'll let you all tonight if it's coming out of the head, or if I'm missing something.

Pulled the bolt out and ran it for 10 minutes and thank goodness no coolant!

The welling up must have been leftovers from the hose leaking.

Good deal!

Yes! I'd hate to have to get another head, have that brought to the machine shop, and redo the valvetrain on that as well.
