129350, 420a headgaskets

Hey guys just wanted to pass on some information I hope it helps out. When replacing a head gasket on your eclipse make sure your do not use a fel-pro multilayered steel head gasket. I found this out the hard way that they dont work after 3 failed on me. Make sure to use the solid steel gasket, even though its a bit pricier I would even recomend using OEM. Heres the part number from mitsubishi 5014576AA hope this saves some headaches.

No. Stop. Wrong.

The current part number for Mopar OEM headgaskets is 5014131AC, used for 2.0 and 2.4 motors. Additionally the OEM HG is not a solid steel, it is a multilayer steel.

And the Fel-Pro MLS has been used with much success.

The 5014576AA part does come back to a cylinder head gasket, where did you get the part number from?

Straight from all data.

Interesting...

The part number I spec'ed in my first post is the current part distributed by Mopar dealer parts counters.

Wait, so the OEM gasket is MLS, and im not supposed to use that? Chrysler designed the MLS gasket to stop the blown head gasket problem using the conventional gasket.

Are you fucking kidding me?

The multilayered has worked successfully for many people here. Have you noticed a pattern to your failures? Are you aware that on the earlier 420a's, one headbolt is slightly too long and bottoms out?

Well I guess I'm totally screwed then, because I've got a Fel-Pro headgasket and head studs.

Fel-Pro MLS headgaskets are absolutely great, that's not the problem. If you blew 3 in a row then you have other issues... most likely the block or head is not flat and smooth, or a bad tune.

Actually, part numbers M04667528, M04694324, & 5014131AC all have been superseded by part number 5014576AA.

So the part number that the op listed is the current part number.

Thanks. Yes I should have stated that this was the current part number and that the others were superceeded. No I did not put them on upside down. no my head was macheined and I checked my block it was fine. What is this about the one headbolt bottoming out? And I'm sorry for saying that the solid steel gasket was the replacement. I checked again and a multilayered steel gasket is infact the new part. It is just a thicker version to prevent a engine knock. Tsb bulletin number 99-11-007. I do however still stand by my opion against the felpro brand gasket.

Which Fel-Pro gasket did you use?

#9922PT or #26501PT ?

26501PT is .010" thicker, for heads that have been resurfaced.

Maybe you could explain to us what exactly makes the Fel-Pro gasket so inferior, other than it's brand label?

Just because the head was machined doesn't mean it was machined correctly for use with an MLS gasket. Hell, I've seen shops put heads on a belt sander and swear it'll work with an MLS gasket.

How much warpage did you measure on your block? How much on the head? Have you pressure tested the engine? Are you sure that the cylinder head and block are not cracked?

Trust me dude, the problem is not the brand label on your headgaskets... there's something else going on with your engine and we need to get to the root of the problem here.

.001 max on the block.
.003 was the max on the head.
.000 after macheining on the head.

I have not done a pressure test yet.
I am not sure which part# it was. And my problem might have been I got the wrong one. I just asked for a headgasket... That might have been the problem.

And I say again my opinion was that these gaskets did not work well for me.

True statement. Nothing wrong with Fel Pro. Personal experience and quantitative data of others.

Do the ARP head bolts have the same problem or are they ok?
