While I was trying to hunt down why my belts start squealing after I fixed my exhaust leak, I noticed that my crank pulley has quite a bit of side to side movement.

I used a 3 jaw 5 ton puller to remove it at the inner tabs during dis-assembly. It appears to be sitting flush all round after re-install, but still wobbles about 1mm each way. Could I have bent it while removing?

maybe you didn't put the pulley in straight maybe it went in slanted best thing is to take it off again and make it straight I don't think you could of bented the pulley unless you were hiting it with a hammer or something

No, not hitting it with a hammer.

Being interference fit and with how far it goes on, it shouldn't be crooked when all of the way back.

I'll take it off, inspect it and put it back on to see if that changes anything.

Yeah, it is possible to bend it. Generally happens when you put the "hooks" of the 3 jaw puller toward the outside, but possible still. Could the pulley have hit up against the inside of the "frame" as you took it off? If she has a noticeable wobble and she is squeaking then I would replace the pulley.

Nor could he have "bented" it.

Bent, on the other hand, yes. If the wrong 3 jaw puller was used or used incorrectly when removing the pulley it could have bent it or dislodged the outer part from the inner part that is separated by the rubber dampner.

I pulled from the correct location, and no, I did not contact the frame when pulling either.

Now... I have no idea if it was good beforehand or not, this is a 3rd hand car with more previous work than I thought (head machining for one thing) no reports of squealing from the previous owner, but they wanted to get rid of it.

Searching for a UDP if this turns out to be no good. I'll know more when it warms up and I get some adjustable cam gears to straighten them out a bit. Inspect and change pulley at the same time... no sense in doing the same thing twice.

To the OP. The crank pulley is a two piece pulley with a bit of rubber running between the main cast parts. If that piece of rubber goes bad it's really easy for the outer portion of the pulley to get out of alignment with the inner which can cause it to chew up belts and squeal annoyingly.

If you can see the pulley wobbeling when it's fully installed then the outer portion is borked. You'll need to get a new one or an underdrive pulley.

Thanks. I'm trying my luck with an underdrive pulley for a 00-05 Neon. From what I've read here it should work, if not... well, make it work. I'll wait to put it on until after I get ahold of some adjustable cam gears. I'm not comfortable with them being this far out of alignment because of the head machining.

Ran the car again tonight, looks like the rubber went bad.

If you run a 2nd Gen Neon UDP, prepare to not run AC or PS. The outer section has the incorrect number of belt ribs.

Harmonic balancer/crank pulley has nothing to do with the timing belt and should not pose any thread to your internals. Granted, if it's that fucked up, I guess is could wobble around and put a PS/AC/ALT belt through the cover and jump the tbelt, but you'd have to be truly cursed, imo.

Understood. The head was machined enough to throw the timing alignment off far enough that I'm not comfortable with it... doesn't throw a CEL, but I don't like it.

I may have phrased that wrong. Since I need to remove the pulley to redo the timing, I might as well until I do the timing to replace the pulley (fix two unrelated issues at the same time). This car is a toy, so I'm in no rush to fix it right away.

That's what I read when looking up the Neon UDP. In the event that there are 4 ribs on the pulley, I'll find a way to make it work... Junkyard shopping and ingenuity can help....

Or, if all else fails and I can't get it to work I can do one of two things... 1, run without PS... or 2, Give the UDP to my sister to put on her Neon (prefer 1).

The Neon crank pulley uses a 4 rib PS/AC belt. the 2gnt uses a 5 rib belt. That's the difference.

You could try finding a 4 rib belt that's long enough for the 2gnt accessories, but I don't believe they make them that long. The Neon gets away with a 4 rib belt because the AC and PS are much closer together.

Then I doubt it is a 2nd Gen Neon pulley. Unless you have a part number to prove it...

If your 2nd Gen Neon pulley works fine on your Eclipse then it would not work in a Neon.

I personally counted the ribs myself and they are the same so....there is a cheaper alternative for our underdrive pulleys

I hate bringing a post back from the dead, but I thought I'd provide some follow-up. Mods, please feel free to lock this thread if you would like.

I initially ordered the Neon pulley, but they sent me the v-belt style, so I held on to it since it was cheap enough and made a fancy paperweight. I then ordered an Eclipse style from ebay, which kept shredding belts since it would not go on far enough, bore was not deep enough... Neon pulley went on the car (and stayed for a year).

I've gotten tired of no power steering, and after not finding any Eclipse styles with an acceptable price or turnaround time, I decided to try the SRT version again. The poster above was correct in stating that the AC/PS does have 5 ribs. The belt I've had laying around fits perfectly as well.

Now I just need to put it onto the car.

Yes, the SRT pulley is the same, not the standard Neon pulley. The OP didn't specify that it was an SRT pulley, just a neon. I just checked with Dodge and they confirmed that the standard neon uses a 4 rib PS/AC belt, while the SRT uses a 5 rib belt.

Interestingly enough, this does open up a new opportunity for those of us that want an underdrive pulley AND our PS/AC since the only Eclipse/Talon/Avenger pulleys available are the craptacular ebay models that chew up belts like candy

I have the same one in red, got it off ebay. In fact, I think I posted a few weeks ago with pics in a similar thread. SRT UDPs are definately a cheap and longer lasting alternative to whatever ebay or name brand 2gnt pullies are left.
