129093, I really need some help MISFIRE Posted by Raider07, Dec-22-09 10:44 AM
I have a 99 rs with just under 150000 miles on it. I got the car from a buddy of mine who got it with a blown engine. We rebuilt it and now i have it. ALL of the sensors have been replaced, it now has a new MSD coil and wires with champion double platinum plugs gapped at .050. my CEL has been on for quite some time and it comes up as p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, and p0304. Im goin out of my mind tryin to figure this out please help

How sure are you that the timing belt was done correctly?
Ditch the platinums, and go with standard NGKs.

well i did the timeing set up so im pretty sure that it is correct plus the car runs great it just keeps showing a misfire, as for the platinum plugs thats what my friend put in. im thinking it might be the computer

You might want to check your knock sensor. It may be loose, giving you a false code. And your sure your car doesn't stumble at all, even when your power braking?

no the car runs awsome and makes so serious smoke when power breaking:thumbsup i will check the knock sensor again maybe it vibrated too much lol

For fuck's sake. This is like listening to a discussion of high school students trying to talk about a graduate level microbiology class.
If you do not know what you are talking about, then do no just spit some information out there!
What does a P0325 through P0329 have to do with a misfire? Do you realize that if the ECU senses knock it will in fact pull ignition timing?

And what the fuck does power braking have to do with his performance? Are you referring to engine braking/compression braking?
And now Raider07 assumes that his knock sensor vibrating will cause all four cylinders to misfire.

If the car was sitting a while waiting for these recent repairs, you could also have issues with the injectors or old fuel.

Sir, I'm sure you are a very smart guy, but apparently you can't read. His codes were misfire codes. p0300 and so on. Maybe you should read a little more before you start taking crap. Most vehicle us the knock sensor to detect which cylinder is missing. This car may not but its a good thing to check.
And power braking is when you put the car in drive or first gear and hold the brake, and hit the gas. Putting the car under a load which would make the vehicle miss.
Anyways, what color is the smoke, white or black?

Knock is a result of overly advanced ignition timing or use of low octane fuel.
The knock sensor in OBDII equipped vehicles detects the uncontrolled & violent explosion before it is supposed to occur. The PCM will retard ignition timing in an attempt to eliminate knock.
A misfire is when the air fuel mixture fails to ignite altogether. The engine will run rough and you will have an overly rich exhaust.
So again, knock & misfire ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

ok first off i was making a joke about the smoke and the sensor vibrating out. now when most people speak of power brakeing they are refering to locking the ebrake and spinning off the front tires. now here is the sitch again, the car runs great with no hesitation or signs.of a miss, i have been at this for awhile now and just cant seem to figure it out. so please code4 relax

Um, Ok. You don't have a miss and you should look at your computer.
I was just trying to help. I'm a young tech at a GM dealer and I've been building my car for a while and haven't had that problem. Tell us what fixes it.

nevermind.

129110, RE: I really need some help MISFIRE Posted by Yo, Dec-23-09 12:29 PM
And when did I say that a miss and detenation(knock) was the same thing?

Alright, I apologize for being heated Raider07. I get upset when people offer suggestions from left field. I am not saying that Yo is doing that either, but what I am getting at is knock & misfires are not the same thing.

You did not say it was, but you are implying it in the below post.
Originally posted by Yo You might want to check your knock sensor.
I do not want to get in a pissing match Yo, and I respect your knowledge as a tech. However, maybe I am misunderstanding you: the problem reported by the OP is a misfire code on all cylinders. You are suggesting that he check his knock sensor as the culprit. My source of friction with all this is that your offered solution leads people to believe that the knock sensor in some way throws the misfire code when it does not. That is why I posted above regarding the difference between detonation/knock and a misfire.
Am I reading you correctly?

129112, RE: I really need some help MISFIRE Posted by Yo, Dec-23-09 01:18 PM
kinda, I just asked an older tech about our little problem. I thought when you car has a miss, it was detected by your knock sensor.
In fact, it is detected by your crank sensor. When your engine slows down for that breif second, the pcm sees that and reports what cylinder was missing.
I also apologize. I just don't like snap judgements.

So the car runs fine, but just has those codes? Did it hiccup or anything when they popped on the second time? It just seems strange. Maybe a dirty/faulty CPS - but you said it doesn't actually misfire. And yes, the CrankPS finds misfire on OBDII but detecting rate of change in trigger pulse, the knock is a pretty isolated system that, as mentioned, only retards the timing if knock is detected.

sorry it took so long to get back on, the whole christmas thing. i never noticed a change in the way the car ran except for when the IAT sensor exploded the little sensor probe in the intake. i actualy drove the car today to the storage garage (here in PA it was raining) and the still runs great im just at a loss, now that it is in the garage its time to inspect everything asgain round 3 :wallbash

Have fun playing detective :shrug
Its for a fucking Tacoma (don't ask me how I ran across this), but I got a chuckle out of the "trouble areas" listed. They really narrow it down for you, lol.
