is the walbro always got a constant pretty noisy hum to it? for the 1st time in 2 years i removed my backseat and pulled it out to inspect it. i put it back in and went for a test drive without the back seat cushion on...and that pump was just humming. does the backseat cushion deaden the noise so much that this is normal?

Yes.

during the summer, you'll realize that it's louder than the winter. Gas temp effects the sound, don't know why.

Yeah Walbro's are loud. I've heard that doing the pump rewire helps quiet them a bit. Covering the access plate with dynamat or something similar helps too.

Yep. Someone wrote something about an even higher flow fuel pump from a TT supra being quiet. Not sure about it's capabilities, but Walbros aren't from what I've heard the most reliable pumps out there.

Um wow Dave. Please don't tell me you went out and bought one of these? I'm just getting up off the floor after seeing the cost (and that doesn't include any fuel pumps).

I mean, I know I'm cheap (and that's pretty and all), but I did my dual set-up at the tank for like $20.

Speaking of which, I just had another buddy smoke his "Hyundai" engine (basically awd 4g63 platform with a Hyundai body on it) because of the dual walbros giving up. He also did the Y fitting (like I did. I thought that was the basic problem with most set-ups. People would T at the junction of the two lines instead of Y it).

In speaking with Tony (at T1 Raceparts. The guy who helped develop the Injector Dynamic injectors), He is highly reccomending going with an in-tank Walbro and an in-line A-1000. I am leaning toward changing to this set-up over the winter.

Nah, I did not fork over that kind of dough for a billet chunk to hold pumps :p

Just got a single 255lph HP in tank. I came across that setup and vendor during my parts accumulation and was equally floored on that price.

My old 5.9l cummins had enough fuel to pretty much hydrolock a 420a. Just run that setup. Sigma injection pump, lift pump, and in tank pump. Should put you at enough fuel pressure to split the stock rail.

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to bring it back due to an experience I had today. Bear with me here..

I have been running the same walbro 255 high flow pump since 2003. (yea, it's old) and I have always noticed that it has an audible humm at idle. As per the above, nothing to worry about there. Recently, however, I noticed that sometimes at cold startup the humm would not be constant like it always used to be. It would vary slightly and the tone would change. This never lasted long, and didn't happen all the time, so I didn't concern myself with it.

I just got done doing a 500 mile break in on my new clutch, so today was the first day I got on the car in a while. When I was at WOT, as boost would build, the pump would get louder, and I mean real loud! At full boost the thing was screaming and sounded like it was going to explode. As soon as I let off and fuel pressure dropped, it sounded normal.

My question is, do you think this is a sign that the pump is getting ready to fail, or that it was just for some reason pumping at an insanely high fuel pressure and I need to retune my system? As the car did not lean out (narrowband was all the way rich at WOT) and the car did not feel like it was starved for fuel, I am considering leaving it alone and just waiting things out. At the same time, I am thinking it may be smarter to preemptively buy a new pump.

Anyone have a similar experience? Thoughts??

keep an eye out for a GSS342 wally. if you find a good deal on one, do it. if the sound becomes unbearable, just buy one. don't stress over it though. that would be annoying lol

It is up to you - I cannot say personally how long to expect a Walbro to last you. For $100 or so I would buy a new one to have on hand. Additionally since you are boosted I would run a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on things.

Perhaps a bit on the cautious side, but when running under a 1/4 tank and boosting I keep an eye on the fuel pressure gauge in the event of a flicker.

I don't currently have a fuel pressure gauge, but I am cautious like you Dave, and I don't even try to boost the car when I am under 1/4 tank.

I think I will pull the pump just to ensure the filter is not clogged. If it looks good, I will reinstall it, go for a pull, and see how it sounds. If it still whines, I think I may just buy a new one. I have seen them for as low as $73 on ebay.
