128402, Wich pump to use and where to get it? Posted by Cyexmaster, Oct-25-09 10:25 AM
Well right now I have all the parts for the engine rebuild. All I need is the oil pump. But dont know if I should use a stock one (as suggested by a friend that builds race cars) or to use a high volume one.
And where to get these pumps...?
Also I am kinda having second thoughts on my HG (evergreen), dunno if I should use it or buy a cometic or have a bronze one made.... some input in this would be nice....
If you need to know a few specs to say here they are: 8.8:1 JE's eagle H rods Not much milling on the head... Stock valve train beside Brian Crower springs an retainers... Stock cams and gears.. head ports will be cleaned out and polished Stock water pump And will be running an ebay t3/t4 till I get MS then I will save some $$ to get a nice turbo..;) looking to get +400hp
If you need any other info to best answer my questions the let me know I will post the info gladly...
Thanxs in advance!

Get the FelPro MLS head gasket and deffinately use the Melling high volume oil pump. You can get one from Howell or Concept Illusions.

yes, they are. If you can source a different company, do so. I've run several evergreen sets, one to 20psi. no issues. If you already have the set, use it, unless you have extra $ laying around.

I got one at a CarQuest years ago.
Check some "Mom and Pop" auto stores, they may be able to get one for you. If not them, try Napa or Carquest, they may be able to order one.

I'll try at some speedshop and see how it goes..

there's a conventional melling pump, and there's the high volume version. Make certain of which you get.

I would not get a Melling. I would get an OEM before I got a melling. I would get a good used OEM before I got a Melling. I would not take a chance on failure of a Melling.
Just my dos centavos

Melling either normal or High vol...? both bad?
So you would recommend a OE one or what?

Grab a melling high flow from CI Motorsports for 134.99 + shipping.
Melling makes quality stuff, imo. Not sure what Bullett has against them.

I have seen 2 melling pump failures that took out the engines. One was in an EVO (brand new build) and one was in a 4g63. Yes, they aren't 420a's but I have read about Melling failures in our cars/Neon's.
Now, Melling IS a good name out there for oil pumps. In the VW world, its all we ever used for aftermarket. But I see no reason to take a chance on upgrading what is already a great OEM pump.

In my second 2.4 I had a melling high-flow take a dump on me in the first 800 miles, and yes I took the motor all they way down to find out why and it just froze for no damn reason. I have a stocker in there now and its all good.

Zac (Slo2g) had a Melling in his IIRC, and the OP went out, killing his motor. I think he had like 10k miles on it too.

I have had three melling pumps. One on my first stock motor when the OE pump started to fail, one on my first rebuilt motor and one now on the stroker. Never a problem with any of them.

Bango. Just do a quick search on the forums, and compare the number of Melling failures to OEM.

zac's oil pump failed not because of the pump, but because his 'used turbo' had shit that he didn't flush out before installation. the turbo oil galley's made the OP fail, not the OP itself.
