128085, valve springs and rocker arm strength Posted by 95_ESi_Person, Oct-03-09 07:08 PM
I'm making my new car a work in progress for over the years, hopefully for a future son to work on as well, so I'm intentionally leaving things to do later (that and I want to be able to drive it soon).
I've ordered a set of Crower valve springs for the head as the stockers seemed a little worn and weak (varying lengths). Will there be an issue with using stock rocker arms with these springs? I know that there will be no performace enhancements with this, just want to make sure I'm not going to be causing any negative effects by doing this.

Many reuse rocker arms. But if you want to be technical the PT rockers and the 2.7L rockers are stock as well, just on different vehicles.
They do not operate as conventional rockers either but as a cam follower. At the very least I would go to a junkyard and pull some used PT rockers or find an intrepid with the 2.7L.

You'll be fine with the stockers but, as Dave indicated, you can use a set of 2.4's or 2.7's as an upgrade to better oiling on top.

Thankyou.
I'll use the stockers for now as I'm planning on some turbo grind cams in the future, I figured I could change the rockers and lifters at that time (along with the valves).

Has anybody ever enlarged the holes on the stock rockers? I'm thinking about doing this.

Thats a good question I am now intrested in this myself. I dont see it being a problem. Just have to make sure you clean them up well.

I think I will try this, and I think all that would need to be done is make sure that it is deburred very well.

Personally I wouldn't unless you have a machine shop that can polish the insides of the rockers where they sit on the lifters.

The 1G neon/ 420A valve train has been known to fail on modified and stock vehicles. Cannot find a pic of a failed lifter, but the design of the pt / 2001+ 2.7L rocker shows how dodge fixed the problem.

The recessed area for the lash adjuster has been known to come off its rocker literally. The PT and 2001 2.7L rockers have raised bars to keep them in place at all times. The center piece of the neon/420

The newer rockers also provide better oil control in the top end, over the older design.
