128037, Saturn Alternator on a 420a?
Posted by mreigle, Oct-01-09 04:52 AM
My car isn't a daily driver and is usually hooked up to a battery tender to keep the battery charged. I still loose amps after a little spirited driving.

I have a friend at slowboy racing who was telling me about a Saturn alternator swap that works well for 4g63's and should work well for 420a's as well.

Has anyone ever done this swap?

Search on Neons.org.

I am almost positive they do this as well, so it should work for us.

I know people who have done this on 4G63s with good results. There is some fabrication involved, but I suspect you can handle it. If it works on a Neon, it should work on a 420A.

Thanks for the input.

I ran some searches on Neons.org and found nothing. I will work on this project and post my results.

Since I'm such a "Neon Enthusiast" over there, lol, I thought I would search a little also. Just a couple of interesting links for stronger alternators;

and yes, I could find nothing on the Saturn alternators either.

Go figger.

Thanks for the links. The comments relating to charging issues at idle were good to note. My car will sit idle at meets with the audio and video going sometimes and this is probably where my issues are stemming from instead of the spirited driving having a draw on the battery.

You may even want to look at an ODP (over drive pulley) for your alternator. lorenzo over at neons.org sells them.

I did read that a smaller pulley helps to charge while idle. I will have to see how it handles the usual built engine alternator built shredding.
