I bought the 95 last night. Its a GS and its rough.....actually, sayin rough is being too nice However, I only paid $800 for it so I don't feel too bad. The car runs....however, it has a 'whurrring' noise from the back end. The only way I can really describe it is to say it sounds like if the car had a drive shaft (like a Chevy) and the driveshaft was 180 degrees out....or like a washing machine when its startin to spin up .

The engine and tranny *SEEM* ok and the body isn't perfect by any means....however, a paint job will take care of most of that. The one thing I need though (well, body wise) is the rocker panels that go on the doors. The drivers side has a small crack, and the passenger side isn't there.

If anyone is interested, I'll post pics later. I know I only paid $800 and being honest, that was probably too much, but it'll be fun to have a project. I haven't had a good project since I did an engine/tranny swap in my '81 DeLorean.


Also, is there a junkyard that is dedicated to eclipses that anyone knows about? Where do ya'll usually get parts from? I notice that most parts seem pretty cheap on the car. The maintence issues I want to take care of are brake pads (probably needs them) and rotors (DEFINITEY needs them....or atleast turning...but the rotors don't seem too pricey) a motor or transmission mount, and I have a small coolant leak that seems to be coming from the thermostat housing area. Not sure exactly where though....I'll pressure test it later to find out exactly. Ohh and solving that whurring noise. It does need 2 new tires....strangely enough, one in the rear and one in the front

Can someone tell me the common issues that ya run into on these 95 GS's? After doin some research, it seems the general thinking is that the GS's are the WORST cars of the bunch.

ok ill start off by saying welcome to the dsm world... and i dont think gs's are the worst of the bunch... the turbo'd from the factor eclipse can get really pissy and break down far more than any 2gnt i have ever owned... turbo'd or not... as for the whirring noise... have you been able to pin point where it is coming from??? like under the rear seat or is it an external noise?

Thanks! :) Yea, it seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. It seems to only happen on acceleration and then goes away.

Tonight I actually got A LOT done. I fixed the power windows and noticed it even has power door locks. I guess I can get a key fob for it and somehow program it to the car. I also got all the lights working on the car (interior wise) except for the overhead lights. For some reason they have no power going to them. (Checked with test light) The sunroof works fine though so I would suppose power is getting up to that area. Any ideas on this??

Also, when I was fixing the shifter light, I noticed a very smaller light that was just sitting under the ashtray area. I couldn't figure out where in the world it went to. Can someone tell me where this goes?

I'm thinkin about gettin a subscription to alldata for this car since I'm not familiar with it. It does seem to be pretty straight forward on working on it and pulling things apart though.

Tomorrow I'll be getting a new set of tires for it (which could be causing that whurring noise I was mentioning earlier; I hope so anyway) and will be replacing all the brakes and rotors on the car along with trying to find out where the small coolant leak is coming from. (looks like the gasket at the thermostat housing so it shouldn't be too bad)

Any plans on changing the t-belt, tensioner pulleys? Do you know when it was last done, if not that should be one of the first things you do.

the only thing i can think of that makes whirring noises coming from the rear of the car would be a wally fuel pump but it could also be something mechanical that just needs to be greased up... and if memory serves me correctly i believe there was a light in the eclipses that went under the ashtray so you could see whaere to put your cigarette if it was dark... i may be wrong but thats just what i think is the place it goes...

I haven't changed out the t-belt yet, but I've read ALOT of issues with them. I'm sure the other owner didn't either. The car has 96k on it. Lookin at the motor, it looks like changin out the timing belt is a HUGE job! How bad of a job is it? I'm guessing its easier to do with the passenger side tire and cover removed.

Heh heh. It is probably average for transverse I4 engines. Tools required are basic. It's the kind of thing you do over a weekend, not an afternoon. Have a look at Timing Belt Replacement.

No, its not just you. I have been working on FWD for way too long though. Between Toyota dealerships and private shops. Lol.
