127277, 6k carnage

Ran at the Shoot Out this past weekend with the NA. First run was a 13.231@106.09. Hmm, looking pretty good. I just take a leisurely run on my first run of the day and already I'm down to the new best time. This could be a good day.

But not so much, lol. Next run, when I shifted into third and pulled, right around 6k, she died. It appears that somehow something got caught in the timing belt. New belts and parts. Quite a bit of beating on the dyno with no problems (212whp), so the only thing I can think of is the oddball case of something, somehow bouncing up into the belt.

Actually got lucky. It appears that the rockers took a beating,

All the intake rockers, busted.

But the valves aren't as bad as I thought;

They actually give the appearance of being normal, lol. I'm sure they are bent, but it looks like I may get away with just the intakes (again. Same thing happened when I had the water pump pulley fall off, lol)

I didn't get a shot of the pistons, but there was really nothing to see. One of the benefits the hardy JE's.

Impressive! Imagine the kind of carnage you're gonna see with 2.5x the power :D

At least you dropped your best time by almost a 10th of a second

When I heard you had a problem with the belt, I thought the worse for you Mark. Atleast its only a couple of valves and some rocker arms then a cracked head or something bigger you know.

On a side note, congrats on the new best time.

Damn. You do so good all year long, only to break at the Shootout.

Turd's luck, my friend. Turd's luck.

That sucks, Mark... but congrats on the new best time for your car. We were wondering what happened to you when we didn't see you on Sunday.

Show your friend this thread. My rockers looked similar when my alternator belt shot into the timing belt at ~6500 rpms. I will NEVER run without a timing cover again.

Glad you hit a new best Mark, sorry that it came at the loss of some valvetrain components. Did the cams come out unscathed? Mine were toast, huge gouges from the rockers slamming into them

Yeah, oddly enough, they came out unscathed. Centerlobe roll seems to be fine. Maybe it had something to d with the 2.4 rckers. I dunno.

You know that could have been so much worse. I have never broken a rocker and I couldn't see how it could be done. Well, now I know :9

You know that feeling you get when you pop the hood and see no belt? Well, I didn't either, until then. Ouch.

Honestly think there is a possiblity of below that. POSSIBILITY

Didn't see ME? Damn, where were you and Mark? I looked all over but couldn't find you guys. I called you but got no answer. How did Mark do?

:wavy Pussy, lol. Mine's staying off. I'll take it like a man.

Thanks for the support guys. Still a cool time at the track. FINALLY had one of those $1 ice creams (I had the time). I'm actually craving one right now.

A little more display, lol. Sneaky suckers.

And that's with the crankscraper on there. Well, I'll be searching.

wait a min, what are those little pieces? they look like small dowel pins or something...?

might want to flush out and clean all the oil passages just to be sure no junk from the rockers is still there....

BTW I will be using my timing cover, but I chopped off the top part so it will be easy to work with the cam gears...

Mine is getting glued to the inspection cover so that I can still bolt it back in place even though it will be cut just above the engine mount.

The other thought I had was to use a large hole saw to cut out openings just so that you can see the gears themselves.

You know I was thinking that I could do that too but I already cut the both rear and front timing covers so... but if I wanna be a lil more stealth I will do it so no one sees the adj gears...

Had a friend that did that and also had all the pulleys in aluminum but painted black so no one would notice along with an msd coil also painted block.. lol

The 2.4 rockers come with roller bearings inside. Obviously, they got liberated. All over the place ;-)

Yeah, I got some cleaning to do

Just to be sure we're on the same page, I said I run without a timing cover. But, I do have a lower "race" cover on there. It basically covers the belt down low (up to the water pump pulley) for any crap that should come off the track.

After closer inspection and discussions with others reving high, it appears that it was my own parts that foiled me. It looks like the alternator belt flew off and fell into the timing belt. I beleive that is the story now, lol.

But anyway you look at it, this is what can happen without a cover...........
