12697, time to change the valve cover gasket Posted by Dave_FL, Jan-23-02 09:06 AM
I have a bad leak in my valve cover. Oil is coming out more and more everyday. I am going to change the valve cover gasket on friday. I know where to get it and I kinda know how to do it. it cant be that hard. Not like installing a turbo or anything..lol. But I do not have a torque wrench. Is a torque wrench absolutely necessary? Could I damage anything by tightening it too much. Oh i almost forgot....Whats that stuff that you put on the gasket called? THANKS!!!!

I watched the mechanic at Satan fix mine once because it had a leak and he used a bunch of Mitsu sealer on it but was telling me he didn't like the Mitsu stuff and liked some other stuff. I used a RTV copper sealant made by Permatex. No leaks since I did it myself.

Not very much, I broke one using a normal socket set. Had to tap it and pull it out, not fun.

There is a specific sequence to tighten the bolts. In the first picture, each of the 8 valve cover bolts are numbered. Just tighten them in order to 3.3 ft-lbs . Then tighten them in order to 6.6 ft-lbs. Finally, tighten them in order to 8.9 ft-lbs. from corbin..

If the sealant has to cure then how do the people drive their cars home after getting it done a satan? I was planning on doing it tomorrow at about 3pm and then going to the track at about 7pm.

You HAVE to have deep wells sockets to take off the valve cover. I tried it once without it and got stuck. I had to put it back together and drive to the auto parts store to buy the socket and do it the next day.
