126906, UDP is junk now... Posted by 740 turbo brick, Jul-30-09 11:22 AM
While pulling my motor out a few weeks ago I neglected to take the UDP off and damaged it quite a bit in the process. I chipped quite a few sections of the border for the belt (what keeps it on track). While taking it down the freeway at normal speeds it completely obliterated the PS belt. Im just going to throw it in the scrap pile and put the stock one back on. Considering I now have the cams, how much top end could I really lose? It wasnt a huge gain in the first place. Just a bit freer revving. Ill probably get another one when the funds allow.

You put the puller on wrong, didn't you?

No, I just made the mistake of leaving it on while pulling the motor. Ive done it before, although its not the best idea. I had some problems getting it out, and by the time it was out it was pretty much destroyed. Puller worked great though..

Most of those are for 4G63 engines. Besides they're ALL cheap chinese knockoffs.

Did Howell stop carrying the AF/X UDP for our cars? I went looking and couldn't find it on their site anywhere.

That is why I posted the link. Was not sure what platform the OP was speaking on, and both are covered in the link. As far as the price is concerned, maybe you are ok with spending more money when it is not necessary. The differences in udp's (not to mention the cars they are used on + driver characteristics) is not worth mentioning. Bought my tti pulley last year for $100 shipped, which was not what it retailed for. Had that deal not surfaced, it would be ebay all day. We are talking about a solid piece of aluminum, not the jack-in-the-box failure the obx lsd appears to be.

I strongly disagree. Non-engine parts....intakes, exhaust, lights, ect sure, you can go a little cheap and go the ebay route, if it breaks, it does no real harm. But something like the UDP, if you go cheap and it fails, then what?! You're fucked.
Personally, I'd rather spend the extra $100 to ensure a good quality part and piece of mind.

Well, honestly, the one I had on my car was one of the no name $30 shipped ones from Ebay. We tested it out, turns out it was nearly perfectly balanced out of the box. And I had no problems holding a belt on it until I fucked it up.

I see your point of view. I found an ebay udp at the yard. Cost $5.00. It was a two piece and one of the bolts was stripped. Should have retapped it, but ended up getting a MP/x udp for $40.00. There is certainly nothing wrong with spending $100 for piece of mind. The AF/x was $180 when I got into cars, which I think is a bit much. Point is, the ebay unit is not a piece of crap, like some of the parts are. Like any two piece udp; thread the bolts in properly, and torque to spec. No worries.
