126851, Engine Swap Question??
Posted by DanKid, Jul-28-09 07:48 AM
I'm almost done swapping over my blown motor with a built one that I purchased off of a 2gnt member. I suspect though that the block is either off of a neon or newer 2g because it looks different from my old 96 motor. The flexplate that was on the motor had 4 bolt holes while the flexplate on my old motor had an extra smaller hole. Also the holes were a different spacing so I ended up having to use the flexplate from my old motor. Now the 4 bolts that go through the flexplate are not long enough to thread through to the flywheel. I'm totally confused. :scratch

I did a search and saw something about modular to non modular but didn't really understand if this is what i'm dealing with now. Can anyone help clear things up a bit?

If the "flexplate" from the new motor was about an inch thick, that's a flywheel from a non-modular clutch.

Yeah it seemed pretty thick. I put in my old flexplate but now the bolts seem to short. Will I be ok by just picking up some longer bolts at Satan or is there other crap I'm gonna need to buy to get this thing fully up and running?

You sure your clutch isn't just sitting further away from the flexplate and the bolts will suck up the slack?

I tried pulling the cluth with my finger to see if it would get close enough to thread with the bolts but there was just too much space between the flexplate and clutch. I'm stumped. It has to be something with the built motor cause I am using the same clutch and flexplate that was on my old motor. This motor swap project was probably something I should have taken to a professional but I'm flat broke with a job that barely pays so I had to do it myself. I just did a search and found that Chrysler close to me sells the longer 95 Neon flywheel bolts for $2 bucks each so I'm gonna stop by on the way home from work and pick them up to see if that works. :shrug

You shouldn't need the long bolts as those are for the non modular clutch. Did you bolt up the trans and use the clutch fork to push the modular clutch up against the flex plate to tighten the gaps? That's how I've done it and its always worked beautifully.

Try turning the clutch 90*. If that doesn't work, then try again 180* You may not have the clutch lined up properly and, while you can just barely get the bolts to start, it may not be aligned with the proper holes.
