126220, Mandy's Rebuild (Powder Coating And Head Pics Up)
Posted by teklein, Jun-22-09 06:09 PM
So I decided to keep the 2gnt and rebuild it, many of you know that.

It had a bad headgasket and horrible valve seals. Went through a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. Never overheated, although it leaked heavily out of where the block and head met.

AFAIK the block has 256k on it. The block is original due to the VIN matching. Has it ever been rebuilt? No idea.

GSX front brakes are also going to on along with the Tokico/Eibach suspension setup.

Here are some pics so far:

Suspension is at Haz's being swapped with Tokicos and Eibachs to put back on Mandy.

Engine bay as of now:

Really bad HG:

Head:

Block (with cross hatching!):

I broke the rear motor mount bracket:

Organization is key! The one pic may be useful for someone, maybe I will get the thread counts for each and make a wiki post.

Are you resurfacing the head? Any porting, valve job?

For bolt information I refer to a post over on Neons.org

http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=242538

They have some of the information already archived.

Pretty much a stock upper end rebuild, I have the ACR to go fast :P

After Mandy is up and 100%, the ACR will be a garage queen. 2gnt as a fun, sexy DD.

The head will be machined. They are going to flatten it, hot tank it and the IM, check guides, and replace the valve seals.

Im getting the mechanical tensioner timing belt kit from Parts Dinosaur and a Felpro upper kit from Advance to put it back together with.

I know Neons.org has one, but we dont :)

I will take 60 bucks for the HG.

Its in great condition, and would make a great conversation piece.

:P

Also, the GSX brakes are going on with RRE stainless lines.

You've never named a car? Weirdo :P

Lookin good Tim, I wish I was half that organized, but I figure I'll do something similar when I put the fresh engine from my donor car into Malachi.

Hehe!

I always have stuff organized like that. The garage is always clear, because one of my cars is always in it.

When Mandy is done, the garage is the ACR's new home.

Just dropped off the VC, AEM V2, hard coolant lines, and water pipe at the powder coater. They are getting done in wet black.

The upper header (Greddy) is going to be coated in JetHot.

Should be nice :)

Ill update this week with some pics of the painted engine block. Black of course.

Got some parts back!

Modified bracket for the AEM. They all break, so I am going to use a rubber strap bolted under the frame rail to hold the intake up. This way there will not be that much stress on it.

The head has been rebuilt:

And my cleaned/paint block:

Very nice. I didn't see any pics of the header, I am thinking about doing the same coating as you. Just curious as to how it turns out.

Were the AEM V2 labels/stickers masked off prior to powdercoating?

I have heard people having bad luck with their V2 bracket breaking - but I have had mine installed since 2003 and have never had any problems.

The VC looks beautiful.

The stickers were removed. You can get a sticker kit from AEM, just involves some paper work and pictures of your registration, the intake on the car, VIN on drivers door, etc.

Mine was on for like 4 months then it snapped :shrug Dino came up with this idea, so hopefully it will work great!

Header is not coated yet, waiting to see a local members turbo mani before I send to Jethot. This is a local company that does the same thing.

New pics!

Opened the IM up to 60mm for the TB opening:

Rear disc swap, stainless lines, and lots of cleaning:

GSX front brakes, stainless lines, rebuilt, lots of cleaning. Brake pads are on the way:

Wont be long until she is running again. I have all the parts to put the motor back together, just waiting until after the SO to get it squared away!

Looking good Tim. I really should have bored out my IM to match my 60mm TB when I had it off during the PF install. Really regretting not doing that now after seeing your pics..

Guy named Brad who is in Simpsonville. It was 150.00 for the VC, AEM, and water pipes. That also included welding the aluminum bracket back on for the intake.

I also really noticed the brakes. I have never seen the difference between the GSX and our brakes before. Those look huge in comparison side by side :)

Everything looks very nice!!
