It isn't your belt. Sounds to me like the bearings on your PowerSteering pump are going.

If your A/C was off, and this was the sound I think you can rule out A/C. Don't worry, it doesn't cost too much to just replace the pump. You may as well flush the power steering while your at it.

Yeah, I vote for the tensioner pulley too, spray some lube around where the bolt goes through it and see if it goes away or changes pitch. Btw, that's just to troubleshoot the problem, not a quick fix. It might make it worse, but at least you know what to fix.

yea i went ahead an sprayed that area and it went away. I had this thing replaced like 2 years ago. Could i have maybe put it in backwards?? Anyone got the hook up or do i just go have the bearings replaced on the idler pulley??

It can't be installed backwards, the only thing that can be placed differently is the washer that the bolt uses that goes through the actual tensioner's bearing Its about 1 1/2" in diameter, gold/brassish looking. That should be installed on the inside of the bearing, between the bearing and the actual tensioner bracket.

the bearings are fine. If you like, you can buy some regular bearing grease at your local autoparts, open the bearing, and repack it w/ new grease. That might help if it looks rusty from the outside.

Not to push you to repack it, but if you want, take the bearing w/ the cover removed (one side), and get a "gob" of grease (for lack of a better term), and put some in the palm of one hand. Take the bearing and push the bearing on the corners until its packed. Sorry. Hard to describe with words how to do it.

You can just replace the bearing instead of buying the whole thing. I did this years ago when I had the same sound. It's been fine ever since. The bearing is only $7.80 at the link below....

I am having the exact same sound also. Im tensioner may have 10k miles on it but my car was in pieces for over a year before i finished the build. I thought it was my ac/ps belt but its new. Im glad i seen this post i was albout to go buy a belt thinking i got coolant on it or something.

Or the easiest and best option. Remove that POS tensioner, get a shorter belt and use the power steering pump adjustment for your belt tension.

I don't remember the belt size off the top of my head but I'll look tonight if I'm out by the car.

Ok well i went ahead and used another tensioner pulley that I got from a local shop and the bearing looked fine. so, i started the car and it still makes the noise. Then when you give gas it gets a little louder and quicker? So, im not sure what to do now. Can you run this w/o that tensioner, I Fkin hate that thing. Let me know.

unbolt the pulley and tensioner bolt, yank that bitch out and put on a shorter belt. I should be out where the car is tonight so that I can check what size the belt is.

Thank You I just needed the belt size. So, is this what most people end up doing?? It seems a lot of people have problems with the tensioner. Anyone have a part number im looking it up and the belt options are only pwr steering/ac and poly v-alt?

just tell the parts store that you need a 5 rib 49" belt. they might have it listed like 5k490 or something like that.
