I need help asap with a few things in the bottom end.

1. The gear on the crankshaft that the timing belt runs on-how the hell do I get that off? I tried threading bolts into it, but Im afraid they will break

2. The lower bedplate-I cant get that thing off!!! I removed all the bolts expect I cant get the bolt out below where the oil filter screws on. I have it almost out though.

I cant even get the bedplate to crack loose.


Any suggestions appreciated because I need that stuff off to get my engine bored/honed and cleaned and I also need to get the crank out


One more thing- My rod bearings looked almost new with 94,000 on them and my crank is in good shape. Do I get the crank reground or just polished?

It calls for a "special tool" - i used a small flywheel puller used for JetSki engines. Just find something that will work - threading bolts in isn't going to do any good. If you get the bedplate off, the crank, oil pump, and that pulley will all come off together. From that point, it may be easier to remove. (that's how we did it)

Have you removed the oil filter adapter plate? That has to come off - it just threads out. The bedplate is a bear to get off, because it is doweled to the block as well as sealed togehter - whack it with a rubber mallet, it will eventually seperate.

That's still a bolt in it. ;-)

Mine were the same .. 104K miles, looked like new. We just polished the crank journals and went on with it.

I agree with what was said above. Go to napa autostore, they have the pulley remover to remove the crank gear pulley.

Also you must remove the oil filter collar. If you cant, you need to loosen the bolt under it and you *should* be able to squeeze it out. I was able to do it once.

Alright, before I checked back, I went and rented a harmonic balancer puller, bought some strong ass bolts and cranked and got the gear off.

Then I whacked away at the bedplate and it popped loose too.


How do I thread out the oil filter plate?
