125376, Anyone running just AC with no power steering? Posted by halfasss101, Apr-27-09 06:21 PM
Hey everyone, not sure if i posted this in the right section, but it seemed to me like it wouldn't be too out of place here. My problem is that something is not lined up in my pulley system for the AC/PS belt so the belts keep shredding. They usually last a couple years, but after i just pulled the motor to put on my built head and new clutch a week ago, the new belt already shredded and came off. I was wondering if anyone has found a belt that fits just the A/C compressor and does not run the PS pump. No PS doesn't really bother me too much. Also, will running w/o PS for awhile and then going back to it later if i feel like it cause problems with the rack leaking fluid if i put the belt back on there after running it without fluid for a period of time? Kind of an odd question, but i'd rather deal with no PS than having to replace belts every week at 18 bucks a piece. Another thing i noticed, It may take alot of money to go NA on this motor to make power, but it doesn't take much to make it pull on most cars. Anyone else running P&P head with Stage 2 cams and feel a world of difference? I was amazed and added much more power than i expected. Will see the real difference at the track next month. Hehe Thanks in advance for any help! Cameron

I am wondering the same thing myself. I want to keep my AC but get rid of PS. How would you tension the belt though?

I was just thinking a belt that was just the perfect size to have good tension when the AC compressor is bolted up and belt around crank pulley and AC compressor. Maybe not a good idea, but I just dont want to replace belts every week. maybe i'll just get rid of them both. I dont really use AC anyway. Saves gas. Lol

Not really. Mythbusters disproved it.

Hmmm..... I actually notice about 40 miles less on a tank by the time the gas light comes on

You can run only AC, or only PS...the choice is up to you. There is somewhere in the wiki or through the search about belt sizes for running one or the other only.
Basically what I would do, go out there get a rope or a shoelace or something...and just run that around the pulleys and measure it. Then you have the length you need. From there its just a matter of loosening up one of the pulleys and then tightening back in place once the belt is on.
It can be done. Here is the reference page. I just noticed there isn't a belt size up for AC only so do what I said above and update the wiki if you so desire.

i did see that page and didn't find what i was looking for. I will give that a shot with the shoelace and if i find a belt, I will update that page. Thanks

the problem with running AC w/o power steering is that you don't have any way to tension the belt. perhaps if someone found a pulley for the tensioner assembly that was ribbed instead of flat that could possibly be used to tension the system in a reverse manner.

True, there is no "tensioner" for just the AC, but that doesn't mean you can't get tension on the belt.
Wanna know how I tensioned it? I unbolted the AC unit, fit the belt that I measured on the pulleys, and yanked the AC unit back into place and bolted it back in place.
Was it a PIA? Yes. Did it work however? Yes. I ran the belt for about 4 months and then I said fuck it and got rid of it.
