125365, No start/No crank signal voltage
Posted by Slo2g, Apr-26-09 09:42 PM
Ok guys, I've been trying to figure out what the problem is but I can't seem to figure it out and thought I'd post it up here to see any new ideas.

Problem: Car won't start, has no spark.

What I've tested:
A: Power going to CKPS- 9 volts(yellow wire)
B:Verified ground at CKPS
C: Power at CMPS: 8.89 volts
D:Ground at CMPS
E:Signal voltage at CMPS: varies from .4 to 4volts
F: Power to coil pack(middle wire)
G:No signal voltage coming out of CKPS(blue/white)at sensor or ECU.
H:Tried 2 new CKPS. No change
I:Tried new ASD relays. No change.
J:Tried new CMPS. No change.
K:Tried known good ECU. No change
So after trying all this the car still won't start. I'm open to any and all ideas. I've tried everything that I can think of...Please help.

Did you try running new wires yet?

That would probably be my next thing :shrug

So when cranking the motor over, you have no signal coming from the crank sensor to the ECU?

Correct, and I didn't run a new signal wire but I ran a new ground. I didn't figure the need to run a new signal wire if I'm not getting anything at the ECU.

What year, out of curiosity?

Checked fuses? Assuming you have power to sensors they're okay, but still something to check.

Try pulling the signal pin out of the CKPS connector, then probe it without a wire. Could be it's grounding out somewhere, maybe over the EGR pipe if you still have it functional. Are you tapping the stock ECU CKP signal for MS or are you running only MS?

I have checked the fuses but I'll check again. I'm a 98 and I've tapped the signal wire for MS but Im still on stock ignition. I took the old wire and cut it out and resoldered new wire into thinking that could have been the problem as well. Also with the crank signal wire I can check cont. between the pin on the conector and the pin on the ecu. No ground when the sensor is unpluged and the ecu unpluged. When I back probe the sensor with everything plugged in its grounded.

Sounds like the problem is the signal then. I believe the ECU grounds the sensor, thats why you arent getting a ground when the ECU is unplugged. If you have no signal coming out of the computer, I would start there.

There should be no reason for you to run any new leads for these sensors at all. Reconnect your CMP/CKP to the OEM harness and then backprobe the signal at the ECU. If you don't know how to backprobe with your meter, hit up the search. It's easy peasy.

I suspect there is a single connection on the backside of the engine, near the throttle body, that hasn't been reconnected. If that connector is open, you can crank for hours, swap out sensors, swap out ECUs, and finally give azdave a call to come over with his super meter and the FSM to remind you how to methodically check every signal line relating to starting.

(Note: Just because that connector might be plugged in doesn't mean there hasn't been damage inside it. Backprobe across the related pins right at the connector to ensure continuity through it.)

I will double check behind it but I only added a ground, I didn't replace the ground. I also took out a section of wire that I tapped into for the MSnS tach signal and put a new wire in its place(a section of about 2.5") and I did back probe the sensor while it was plugged in. Driggs, you sound like youve been here before with this situaiton.

Heh. I have. We spent most of an evening trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start. When switching out known good sensors didn't work, I went to backprobing the sensors. When I got alternating 5VDC at the sensors, but not at the ECU, it basically pointed straight to the harness.

Have you tried ohming out the pins from the sensors to the ECU/power/ground? Make sure you've got continuity between the sensors and the ECU before you start tearing out wires and all that.

Yep, I have cont. between the pins at the ecu and the pins at the harness.

Mandy is here too, take her home with you. 2k and ill even include a title :P

Srsly, youll get it. Probably something simple stupid. Maybe we should swap your CKP and CMP to my car, see if it runs.

Just reading through wiring diagram, the yellow is your ground reference, black/green is power.

can someone plz chime in and help poor zac. He's tried everything and no results. He's contemplating purchasing/borrowing from someone an engine harness. That is unnecessary $ for some kind of simple crap he's up against. Anyone with electrical knowledge/background expertise on 2gnt ignition systems, please feel free to chime in.

He has no signal from the CKPS to the ECU. You should have a wire that fucked up then.

he's tried running a new ground. Apparently he's got continuity between the two

If I had a wire that was messed up(the CKPS signal wire) wouldn't I have a signal on one or the other side of the wire.

Have you ruled out something screwed up with your megasquirt yet? I would try starting it without the MS hooked up.

I have not diconnected MS yet but only thing I'm tied into for MS is the crank signal, I haven't run ignition on it yet...I will deff. give that a try though.

Thats what I said two weeks ago :P

Found the problem guys, the sheilded tach wire on the MSnS harness had been hit by my axel boot clip and nicked it. It caused the signal to make a connetion with the shield(ground). So it was a short to ground, replace that part of the wire and it starts right up. Thanks peoples.

Duh, my bad, sorry! I do have different pins on the 95 though, #44 is an injector controller, #4 is the sensor power.

Well guys, about 6 days after I fixed the grounded out crank signal wire I go to my car after work and get in it and crank and crank and crank....thats about it. So now I am still haveing some weird issues with the crank signal wire and I'm tired of dicking with my harness so I bought another one. I'm in the process of changing it out now. This is taking longer than I would have liked but I now don't live where the car is being kept(parents garage) and I work two jobs so I don't get the chance to work on it as often. Well enough talk here are a couple of pics...

so you did get another harness. good. it'll work. hows the condition of the new one? is it NEW or used?

Yes, I have had a new(used) harness for a couple of weeks now. I got it from Stangmurdera. Thanks again man.

well if he swapped out the harness, and it runs now, WTF do you think it was mike...

Hey whackjob, I was curious if he found a faulty part in the harness or something, or if it was something else.

Jerk.

I didn't really take the time to inspect it, I figured what the hell now I just have spare connectors for most of the things on my car. On another positive note I had been trying to track down a short to ground on my right hand blinker circuit because it would blow the fuse every time going to the right but work like a charm going to the left. Well swapping the harness fixed that as well so for now its going great, but I have refrained from hooking up MSnS......YET!!!! I will probably get it hooked back up and start dicking around with it in the next week or two. Maybe wait untill I get that radiator from Terry so I can solve my overheating problem due to the FMIC. O well, another day in paradise.
