For a little while now I have been living with my 420a burning a bit of oil. I have some what ignored it and just kept an eye on the oil level and made sure I had the oil changed regularly. But now it is starting to get a bit worse. So I'm wanting to replace my valve stem seals this summer. I have never done this before, but I'm not going to have a mechanic do this. So I'm needing to know what all parts I should replace, and what will need to be replaced when it comes to removing the head to replace the valve stem seals. So far all I know of that needs to be replaced is:

Head Gasket
Timing Belt
Head Studs
Water Pump

I know there is a lot more than this, what other things should I replace and need to be replaced?

For the timing belt, get the kit with the mechanical tensioner from partsdinosaur. Maybe you will want to upgrade to pt lifters and 2.7 rockers while you're in there.

That's all I can think of.

You are able to change the valve stem seals without removing the head.

just be really careful so that you don't lose the valves down inside the combustion chamber

How? Everybody I have spoken to says the head needs to be removed, even the dealership said the head would have to be removed. Which through them would of been $2200 in labor alone. I would greatly appreciate details on this, because if I can do this without tearing apart half my engine that would be great.

there are two ways to do it, the easier way, that runs a greater chance of messing it up, involves rotating the pistons to TDC for the cylinder you're working on and then removing the keepers and springs and changing the seals. getting the springs back on is a bit harder this way because the valves WILL drop into the cylinder about 1/4in. If you don't remember to rotate the engine you will lose a valve down inside and then you have to pull the head.

the other way is to pressurize the cylinder you're working on with compressed air to hold the closed valves in place.

if he's replacing the valve stem seals w/o removing the head then he won't be doing the headgasket...

Thanks for the info, my father is a mechanic and looked this up and confirmed what you all have said. So I will be taking the car up to him, for he thinks it will be an easy job.
