Ok so i built my 5th motor and heres what its doing......started up first thing, noticed the #1 cylinder was filling up with oil on top of plug......30 min later car wont start. 135 compression across the board. only 1st cylinder is filling with oil......then later on, #4 cylinder compression went up to 200 and then fill up with oil and then back down to 135 compression......any help? motor was 040 over everything new. thanx

oil in the spark tube is usually a missing or damaged valve cover gasket around that particular tube. that will need to be fixed or the ignition will arc out through the oil instead of making the plug spark in the cylinder.

as far as your compression numbers, 135 seems low but your post didn't make much sense in that area. do you have all the spark plugs removed and the fuel pump disabled? it sounded like you couldn't get the car started and running to regular operating temp so your numbers will be a little low. last time I had to do a cold compression test my numbers were closer to 145-150 across the board at 5000'+ altitude.

ok new problem.....they sand blasted my motor and head and i took the motor apart and there is sand everywhere.....in the head and on the pistons....havent got into the oil pan yet but im sure its there if it was in the head......the motor ran for about 3 min before i shut it off......every gasket on the car is new.....even the valave cover and all the grommets.....not sure how oil was getting in there though.....any one know how bad the sand damage may be?

NOOOOOOOOO!!! Don't EVER sand blast or bead blast our heads! (that's for future searchers).

You have a problem, my friend. (if it was me) Having other heads to work with, I would actually throw that head out and use another. If you are so inclined to roll the dice and use that one, clean, clean clean. IMO, your shop is liable for your head, block and your bearings (as well as oil pump and possibly your block and crank). You will need to COMPLETELY disassemble your engine and THOROUGHLY clean and inspect each part. Your bearings are no good - statement.

Sorry, no good words here except for future searchers, don't do this. Though I know there are some that have gotten away with it, it is very bad practice and your are never sure that you got all the sand/media out of those tiny channels in the head.

i told them to hot tank it and they sand blasted it.....not sure how the hell those 2 got mixed up......so is anything salvageable? im gonna tear it apart monday and have it hot tank good and have the bearings and crank and head check along with the pistons and rings.

like Mark said, your engine is 99.99999999999999(you get the idea)% most likely trash. I would raise holy hell to whoever did that work to your engine.

Bearing are NOT slavageable. Do not let them talk you into that. Crank might be (emphasis on "might" for all of these). Rods might be, pistons might be, block might be if you want to roll the dice that you get all the media cleaned out of there.

I guess what I am saying is that you basically just sandpapered your internal parts. This is a bad job by the machine shop.

Oh yeah, hot tanking needs to be used in conjunction with compressed air. Hot tank for awhile then blow out ALL the channels, then rinse, lather, repeat.

IDK, as I re-read this, all that comes back to my head is don't even try to re-use that head. No No No. There are just WAY too many little channels in there. I've seen engines seized because of valve covers that were bead blasted. You willing to take that chance now?

The gasket was not installed correctly or the cover was not torqued proerly.

Thats horrible. I would really make that shop pay for your motor especially if you requested it to be hot tanked and they sand blasted it without your permission. That would explain why your spark plug holes filled up with oil and your low compression. I agree with everyone else dont even try to use any of that stuff its scrap metal now. Make the shop pay for it all!

ok so everything is torn apart.......can i put running water on all these parts and get all the sand out? even the head? i really dont want to waste anything.......i mean the car ran for about 2 min max but thats all it took......bearings look shot, and im sure the rings are shot also along with all the pumps and gaskets. can the head be taken apart completely and have running water on it for a full day and possibly get everything out? and the block too? i mean i know it might rust a little but i have plenty of wd40 and oil to get it all back......im def gonna take it to the shop and ask for my money back, and the sad thing is, i have another motor there getting work done on it and im sure its full of f-in beach sand also......my god what is wrong with people.....do they not even think about what they are doing? someone let me know about cleaning everything out with water and then hot tanking it....think that might be my only shot to save it...thanx everyone

Well you could try but like the others said are you willing to roll the dice? Your most likely going to have to have a valve job done and all new parts the cams may be shot and I bet the cam seats are bad too. Heres the thing if you rinse that head you wont know if every grain of sand is out of it. One grain of sand is enough to mess something up.

yea i understand that......but im pretty confident i can get it all out.......i have a whole set of cams and seats and springs if i need them......what worries me is the crank and the block cause im not sure what happened to the cylinder walls cause the pistons were covered in sand on top and on the walls. does anyone know what kind of chemicals they use to hot tank the block or how they do it? i could just buy everything myself and go from there.
