124754, NO SPEEDOMETER Posted by TheGhost, Mar-24-09 02:30 PM
I was driving under the influence of a good feeling and was doing a bit of spirited driving and all of a sudden my speedometer stopped working. Car still runs fine but speedometer dosen't move at all. Wondering if there is any way to repair this or my worst fears confirmed and now must open transmission to fix if thats the case I figure I go ahead and put a neon transmission because boost is in my future any help as always is appreciated. Thanks Guys ...
P.S. - Why is there always something wrong with my car I mean I know its a dsm but god damn. LOL . But even though I complain she has always been good to me.

could be electrical or your VSS went out

1st thing is to check wiring that goes from the harness next to the EGR

I'd say the first thing to check is if the VSS connector is secure. Then trace the wires back to the EGR 'fondue zone' and see if things are melty. If not, pull the 10mm bolt, remove the VSS and cross your fingers that the pinion is still there...

I dont understand what vss means and when you guys said trace the wires near the egr I dont know what that meant either but I do know i removed my egr system. I still have the solenoid still there but the mechanical stuff has been removed. As far as the vss i would like to know how to check that any help or more info is appreciated thanks.

VSS=vehicle speed sensor
Sometimes you can just wiggle it a little. I've had an experience where my speedometer failed, and it all it required was to tap on the VSS
Barring that, you need to trace the wire from the VSS back to the harness. you don't have an EGR issue as you don't have one.
you can also remove the VSS - but do it very carefully
