124576, New Rebuild please help. Posted by kballard81, Mar-12-09 10:01 AM
Ok i rebuilt the engine 040 over.....i put the engine in and when i poured oil in, it started leaking near the back of the head. heres the thing, i think i didnt torque the head bolt properly as the torque wrench i was using, i think i was 5 lbs below what i should have been. will that cause the head gasket to leak since i was 5 lbs below? i mean i did the 1/4 turn after that so im still short......and then i noticed oil in the water so i drained the water and half the oil that i put in the engine came out of the bottom of the radiator.....im so freakin frustrated already. someone tell me what went wrong. are my head bolts no good now? what else do i need to do? thanx

I dont think 5lbs would make it leak out upon just pouring it in the engine. Are you absolutely sure you put the gasket on the correct way and not upside down???

yea im positive.....i think theres only one way for it to go on......plus everything matched up good on it. its leaking right above the knock sensor where the head meets the block.....i dont understand how that much oil could come out of the bottom of the radiator

Did you have the head re machined? not tryin to insult you, just asking. Also, did you do the plug removal? If so, did you put the plugs back in the head?
I don't think this could be some sorta user mistake. I think its more of a material failure. Like a crack in the block.
Is the oil mixed with the water and looks like brown mud? or are the two still seperated?
Just some questions.

ok i pulled the motor out......there is oil in the water but not water in the oil pan. correct me if im wrong but arent there 1 of the head bolts or the 4 corner bolts that need to be shaved down 3-4 threads? thats the conclusion i came to but if im wrong please let me know. thanx

Uh...did you put them in the right holes...There are 10 bolts. 4 of which are supposed to be put on the outsides of cylinders 1 and 4. They are shorter. The middle six bolts are longer.
Also, did you re use the old stock bolts? Its ideal to replace them to avoid problems. They tend to streach over time and should be replaced with ARP head studs (idealy) or with new stock bolts...If they are streached then they WILL NOT TORQUE PROPERLY.

yes i know the basics.....this isnt my first 420a rebuild.....i followed the corbin rebuild to the T......i used brand new OEM bolts. Brand new 3 layer steel head gasket. block work and head work. basically everything new. but the last rebuild i did, my buddy cut one of the head bolts 1/2 inch down cause of the bottoming out issue. Just dont know what bolt it was.
