124570, swaped motors now issues.....no cel on key dance Posted by donnyb373, Mar-12-09 01:12 AM
ok, this is not about my car but a friends. he put a window in in his block from the #4 rod snapping.
we got a long block from a 99 with paper work stating various stufff about milage and such. well i eplained to him that he needed to switch out all the sensors form his 96 motor to the 99 motor cause of un compatability issues.
we did all this except the oil pressure sensor, just cause he forgot to do it and now that the motor is in the car its a bitch to do at NIGHT and in the cold...laying on a cold concrete pad is a real pita.
anyhow nor him or I can get the motor to fire up. when i do the key dance i get nothing not even a battery disconection in last x starts....
so what do you guys think? i also think he didnt swap out the injectors now that im thinkking about it. but regardless im not getting anything out of the key dance.

Before you suspect the motor, go through and check all the connections. There is a big connector under the intake manifold that is often missed. And sometimes people swap out the VSS plug with the coil plug. Also, don't forget the crank position sensor plug (sometimes missed).
Of course, normal processes are spark, fuel, compression to start an engine.

As far as the injectors go, i think they are the same, but the fuel rails are different. The 96 uses a return line compared to the 99 which doesn't. I've found swapping the intake manifolds is the easiest thing to do. As far as the cel goes just do as bulletdsm stated check all of your connections. Does the car crank or have you tried yet?

Not necessarily. Some but not all. The OPSU (oil pressure) was only a switch, not really a true sender so that is not going to matter. For the most part the general sensors shared the same part numbers across the generation gap.
Test for the usual - current at the usual places. Check your ignition switch. Check the main fuses under the hood.
EDIT: I just re-read that. Is it cranking and not starting? Or not even cranking? If it is cranking forget my ign. switch comment. Check for voltage at coil pack, injector harnesses. Check the ASD relay on the driver side firewall for power.

its turning over just not firing up, im getting fuel pump kick on, no spark, and do not smell fuel,
my friend missed the big harness under the intake but i fixed that issue, relayes are clicking right before the key is turned, im just throwing stuff out there.
biggest thing im noticing is no cel on trying the key dance, it would at least throw 12 or 55

Don i got a new ecu today and hooked it up and tried to start it and no change. So unless both ecu's are bad which i highly doubt cause the original worked fine before i put the new motor in, i think we can rule out a bad ecu. I picked up some new relays today have yet to put them in due to no light but ill try it tomorrow and let you know what happens. Any other ideas on what could cause this issue guys?

replaced the oil pressure sensor and motor fired right up by accident when checking spark plugs. bad news... motor locked up.

Wow. They used to call ME "Captain Halfass." If I just spent a couple hundred on a 'new' engine, I'm damn sure making sure it's got oil in it.
Burp that coolant and cross your fingers. Radiator getting hot on both ends?

Ha ha, I just went to the dyno with a buddy (800whp potential with LOTS O' Cash in it) who forgot to tighten down the oil pan bolt. Got lucky and didn't fall out on a pull. But got unlucky and had to pay for the dyno clean up :order
