124520, Is there a difference between Crankshaft Position Sensors? Posted by JasonST, Mar-09-09 05:28 PM
So I still am stumped. I'm getting no spark/fuel... I've checked everything I can possibly think of and everything checks out. The only thing I can't test, are the sensors themselves seams like. So specifically I'm asking aobut the crankshaft sensor, I had to use the old one I had from a 96 motor, into a 95, because the prongs are different, one is flat, and one uses round pins. I don't think this would make a difference, but maybe it does. I'm out of ideas. Is there anyway to test the sensor itself? Thanks. So far I've tested...
1. The Crankshaft position sensor wires, all 3 check out. Got ground, 8v reference, and 5V signal.
2. The camshaft position sensor, all 3 wires check out. Got ground, 8v reference, and 5v signal.
3. the fuel pump relay check out, all wires check out, and it clicks plus primes when I turn the key on.
4. The ASD relay seams to be good also, wires are good, and it clicks when the key is on.
5. The ecu/PCM seams to check out, comes on when key is on, turns off after a couple of seconds, and doesn't have any CEL's or codes when checking with an obd2 scan tool.
PLEASE help I'm completly lost...

hey the flat pin crank sensor is the only one you can get now you have to get a 455 connector kit from autozone (around 20 bucks) splice it in and you should be good in 96 they changed alot of crap on the 420a so good luck

The easiest way to see if you are even getting power to the coil is to use a test light. Disconnect your coil plug from you coil and get a test light. Connect one end to the negative side of the battery, and the other the either the right side or left side of the plug (center is the ground, black wire with red stripe). Then have someone in the car crank while you watch. If your test light blinks then you know you are atleast getting power to the coil. O yea make sure the test light has a good bulb before you start.

Almost a month later, but anyway...
Backprobe your sensors. Get your schematic out and verify you've got the alternating 5VDC at the main ECU connector during cranking. If you don't get the alternating voltage (signal), then backprobe at the individual sensors.
If you get signal at the ECU, main screen turn on. Just kidding. If you get signal at the ECU, then you know the sensors are working fine and you need to consider things like your ASD relay. Of course, if you don't get signal at the ECU, but you DO at the sensors, then it's a good chance you've missed that big connector on the harness under the TB or have damaged wire harness hiding somewhere in the engine bay (under the TB, near the EGR tube, most likely).
Good luck.
