124463, Car not starting but is cranking, advise? Posted by valdeelrico, Mar-06-09 04:18 PM
Ok here's is the situation tell me what you think. I own a 1995 esi talon july 1994 production MTX One day I was stuck in highway traffic and running low on gas, while the gas light was on the car shutdown on me. cranking with no starting. next step add gas. 3 gallons of gas later same situation. AAA came by and i towed it to my garage a home garage. next morning i did some regular trouble shooting. fuel pump runs and fuel pressur is within range. I have spark, secondary coils are within range with resistance but i get nothing on the primary coils( should i be checking the pinouts for ohms or the harness for ohms/volts). I changed the plugs gapped to .035 ( that's the correct decimal point right?) i replaced the fuel pump relay and none of the Autoparts stores in my area know what a ASD relay is or does. if i can find a replacement relay or how to test mine i can rule it out. i checked the voltage on the harness for the Cam sensor and terminal 3 is off(1.3--V). Crank sensor is reachable from under the car but i haven't been under there yet. If i'm correct in assuming my PCM is bad... So tell me what you think?

95's are prone to faulty ECU's I believe.

Any error codes? Pulling c/e/l codes When my early prod. 95 mtx ecu crapped out on me, when I tried to start the car everything was normal except the check engine light never came on at all, not even for the couple seconds that it's supposed to, and the engine would just crank and crank. That's what alerted me that my ecu could be dead.

ok so I noticed that my timing belt is very loose. I proceeded to check the timing marks and come to find out it's way more involved than i anticipated.
i have ywo problems i can't get he crank pulley off. how high should i have my impact wrench set to it's at about 140 psi. and there's a bolt for the passenger side motor mount bracket that i can't get out not matter how high i jack up the engine and drop the car or vise versa.
so can anyone tell me the best trick to remove the crank pulley and that long black bolt that holds the motor mount bracket to the block through the timing cover.. thanks in advance!!

Are you having issues getting the crank bolt out? it should come out with that much force on the impact. to get the pulley off go to an auto parts store and rent the Chrysler pulley puller. works like a charm.
as far as getting that bolt out, there's two ways. one is the cheap lazy way of cutting a hole opposite the bolt in the fender wall. the other is the proper way of using a jack to play with the height of the engine and slipping it out like a puzzle.

i have the check engine light come on as normal. is there a way to test the relay? does any body have a PCM? and are there any other relays on the car that will swap with the asd relay?

I am having the exact same problem with my 1996 talon. I have already replaced the ECU in my car and it still will not start. the ASD relay is one of the relays right near the firewall on the driverside. if you have an automatic you should have 3 relays and if you have a manual, you should have only two relays. the center one, or the right one (depending on your car) is the ASD and is a generic Bosch relay. check your crank position sensor and your cam position sensors also, as they must send signal to the ecu for the engine to produce spark.

yeah it's generic but i can't find one to match the connector. maybe i'll have to "cut and paste" to make one work. I dohave spark so i'm pretty sure it my pcm.

I had a similar problem a while back. A LOT of people on this forum kept telling me to check the ECU, which I replaced time and time again. It seemed to temporarily fix the problem, but would eventually go back to where you are now.
Anyhow, the 5V reference wire was grounded out in my speedo sensor. Because all the sensors in the car use this same 5V sensing wire it screwed with all the sensors. Try unplugging each sensor, one at a time, and then try and start the car. If your car starts and runs okay with that sensor unplugged then you may have found your problem. Thats how I found my speedo sensor at least... You can run it without either the crank/cam sensor unplugged. The ECU only needs one of them. It will run worse, but good enough for you to do a quick check.
Let me know how that works out for you.

your pulley bearings shit the bed, if you're lucky the head isn't damaged, but from the sounds of things it probably is.
I had this happen once to me, its usually the result of a belt change without changing the pulleys as well.
If I were you I'd throw a belt and fresh pulleys on there, get the timing set right and hope she fires up. If not then you need some fresh valves.

yeah i got them now. so if the worse comes to pass I'll take the head off my car and see if the pistons are good. problem is i still haven't gotten the timing cover off yet. My crank pulley bolt is a hell of a thing. I'm afraid I'll break the bolt off with them impact wrench i guess we'll see Saturday. my neighbors Spyder just broke its timing belt and wondered if he could use a doch 4g head on it...

Just and updated i got my car started and it's running. i had to replace the idler pulley and tensioner pulley. thing is though i didn't have a vise to push down the hydraulic tensioner so i improvise like most Dsmers. i used a jack and the weight of my car. so i changed the oil, and trany fluid (that stuff smells awful. it must be mineral based or something.) and one compression test later i'm driving like always. i have a suspesion question but i guess i'll find the right section.
