124313, 420a Rear main seal? Posted by moosie, Feb-25-09 06:34 PM
My first rebuild and was wondering if anyone has any tips for installing the rear main seal. I already screwed the first one up by trying to tap it in. Every time I tapped one side in the other would pop out. Eventually i had the seal all distorted and decided to stop.

Use a seal driver or appropriate sized piece of pipe or socket if you have one large enough to tap it in evenly.

Agreed. Sockets work well. I like to use a little piece of hardwood over the socket to protect it. It also acts like a deadblow that helps the seal seat evenly more easily.

I used a piece of wood like mentioned above, just make sure you have everything going in evenly and take your time. It's one of those things that requires a lot of patience...
