I replaced my alternator a while back when i first got my car and later on down the road the positive power output came a lil loose and arked enought to melt the old EYE-connector. I replaced it and in general the car runs fine. However, i know that i'm not getting full power from the alternator. My question is very general. What all problems can happen with the alternator other than its complete failure that could cause it to not put out as much power. Belt slipage? Bearings failure? The alternator makes no noise but when i but my blinker on or something it makes all the other gauge lights blink, slightly, with it. I have a small feeling its the connector i just thought i'd ask to see if there was any other things i should look for.

I'm getting under the car to change the crank angle sensor and i'm wanting to play with that at the same time. Just looking for some things to check while i'm under.

Mine does this too. I turn the turn signal on and any other lights that are on, such as gas light, handbrake, etc blink with it. But my battery voltage is good at 13.7 to 14.1. But i'm sure its just because its old. How old is your alternator? Refurb from autozone or brand new?

No, mines actually an origional (believed to be because of the mitsu emblem on it) from a 2gnt at a junkyard. Its used but it works fine other than the blinky problem. I wonder if its a fuse...I've reloomed my entire engine bay and replaced many wires so i've already checked for places that voltage could leak. Nothing has come up, so i feel its gota be something like that. I do have an aftermarket lightweight BRAILLE battery. Those two things, the battery and alternator are the only thing that come to mind.

Is that the standard voltage that's needed? Do you think it could be too much resistance from the old wireing?

ALSO: can you notice a faint, kinda, like the fluctuating under normal conditions, as if its not porducing consistant power all the time? I can barely notice it. I notice it in my headlights to, faintly but its there. They're aren;t effected the same way the gauge cluster lights are, that i can tell. Just another symptom of this "blinky" alternator sickness. lol

If you want to make it less noticable you can rewire the alternator with 4gauge wiring to the battery along with going a grounding mod with the same size wiring. Do a search on the grounding mod, I don't remember if it was also in the Wiki or not. DR1665 did a write up on it a while back IIRC.

I wouldnt worry about it at all. Until the regulator takes a shit or the bearings, i would keep it in. But if it really bugs you go buy a higher amperage alternator.

As said, they all do that. My check engine light (imagine that..) dims when my blinker is on. Its because of the voltage supplied to the cluster, not the voltage being put out. Think of it as your TV, Computer, VCR, Desk lamp, Alarm clock, and maybe 3 other things plugged into one outlet. Now plug in a space heater and turn it on. You should get similar results.
