Anybody have any luck with painting the stock heatshield? If so what paint did you use?

I'm not ceramic coating or powder coating it (for those that don't know me, I'm not a "bling" kinda guy, lol). But I would like to pretty up that shield a little. It does help sell the engine bay.

my buddy did his once and used that 1200 crap from autozone he tryed silver with no luck so re did it in flat black and looked real good with good luck same paint just two differnt colors

try high temp paint the rattle can, I never done but it would work

I heard great things about VHT flameproof.

X2 on the VHT.

I used RustStop Paint from ACE.

Held up great with no discoloration for 8 months before I put the header on.

Cool, thanks guys. I've used the the 1200 before (from NAPA and Summitt) didn't work all that well (but that was on my AWD. Bit hotter on the turbo).

I'll see if the locals carry the VHT. If not, I may give the RustStop a try (though that sounds like my old faithful; Rustoleum)

So, after careful consideration, I figured I would start at my least likely choice (to saty on the shield), Rustoleum. I figured that I use it for just about everything else, so why not try it here. If it doesn't work I'll work my way up.

Well, first I painted it (3 coats) and did a little heat cycling (left it on my garage heater for 15 minutes between coats). I then put it on the car and cycled it on the car (idled for about 10 minutes). Here is how it looked;



Hmm, not too bad. So I ran her around for a little bit (a little more than 500 miles) and this is how she looks now;



Not too bad. You can see that it has lost some of its luster and it has gotten darker by the points of attachment (i.e. the bolts), but it does still look pretty good. I figure if I wanted to, I could put some big washers under the bolts to help hide the darker spots. I guess these don't get as hot as the 4g63's, lol.

Just a little food for thought/point of interest.

Looks clean! Definitely helps out in the engine bay. My stock manifold has been without a heat shield for a while since I tapped the EGT. It definitely looks ugly.

I would think that if you cleaned the shield properly before you spray it...you could use the Part Store Hi-Temp Engine Paint. Or you could got to Eastwood and get some of their Manifold paint. It works well on my old Mopar Exhaust manifolds, so it should work well on a heat shield.
