is there any way to test if the valve guide seals are leaking,Iwas hoping my vacuum guage would solve this.

Not really, no.
If it smokes of oil when you start it after it has been sitting, then valve seals are the most probable culprit.
They aren't very difficult to remove, though you may have a bit of a time pulling them off if they're old, hard, and stuck.

Only the process of elimination. IIRC, If it's smoking at idle after it sits for a while and you have good compression numbers, then it probably is the valve guide seals.
