123698, How to remove the alternator? Posted by Dspoppa, Jan-22-09 03:54 PM
My cars up in the air and I really need someones help, how do you get the alternator out? Its un bolted and free in there but I cant get it out of the engine bay. My cars a 98 5 spd with cruise control. It wont come out the top and wont go down either. It doesnt make sense to have to remove the half shaft to replace it. Help please. DJ

Did you remove the lower alternator bracket as well?
Once that is out it should squeeze out.

another trick is to lift the engine itself a hair with a jack and a block of wood, but you said you have cruise so that trick might not work.
Honestly do what tim said and remove the lower Alt mount and it will come out with some wiggeling

Note to all that have the pleasure of dong this with cruise control. Even though the manual might say remove it, DONT, its not worth it. Thanks again for the help.

Nope. All you need to do is jack up the car so the suspension drops and the alternator falls out. I did mine in 15 minutes while it was raining.

Would this removal be the same for the 97 auto w/ cruise control.

I don't see why it wouldn't be since nothing on that side of the engine is different. Just a different tranny on the other side. Same process.

on some other makes it be a big deal bc gm's and ford AT's have a like snout thats the length of the engine that runs behind but not in are case.
