123487, Power steering belt problem Posted by thormx353, Jan-09-09 08:19 PM
Hey im having trouble with my accessory belt jumping off. I thought it might have been my a/c pulley had gone bad so we got a belt to delete it only to find out that was not the problem. At high RPM's my belt will jump off, but i also noticed today when trying to see if the belt would stay on that my p/s pulley is not aligned with my UDP ( it sticks out a little). I've tried everything i know to keep this belt on, and sick of driving around without p/s. Any ideas to fix it.

Your udp is not aligned good or u dont tighten your belt good enough

The belt has been tight enough. Believe me I've tried different things multiple times. How do you align the UDP

You could add some washers . . .

would that work, or even be safe?

what did you torque your UDP pulley to?

take an impact wrench to your crank/ud pulley. The damn DEALERSHIP didn't even get mine on all the way. I'd put 10 bucks that's your problem.

but its not the UDP thats sticking out to far its the power steering pulley.

Hmmm.
I have never heard of that happening.
How does your UDP line with the AC compressor, tensioner, and alternator?
I would check that they are not off as well. I have heard that spacing some UDP's is necessary. IIRC I heard that about the AFX pulleys.
But, if your PS pulley IS sticking out, check to see that somebody didnt put washers between the pump and the bracket.

Everything else lines up. The alternator belt has never jumped off and is lined up. It's just the stupid p/s pump that isn't lined up. We just put a rebuilt motor in it. I have another p/s pump bracket from another motor but it looks exactly like the one on the car. I was reading through the wiki and came across some kind of problem with 97's power steering bracket, any info on this?

I had to replace mine, it was bent. but it wasn't noticeable to the eye. does your ac and crank pulley line up perfectly?

I believe so. We took a straight edge to everything to make sure when we put the motor in and the p/s was the only one that didnt line up. Do you think i should get a whole new p/s assembly pr can i just get the bracket?

I don't believe it is. But its always good to check :shrug

I had this problem when I did my first headgasket swap. My problem ended up being the bracket for the PS pump was a over a tad too far, the pump was not completly in the bracket right, and my UDP wasn't on the crank all the way.

I had this problem just recently, where it'd jump at high rpm's or if i'd break traction and redline it, it'd throw belts like crazy. Turned out being that the inner (rear?) mounting hole for the P/S pump (by the oil dipstick) is a bit larger than the bolt shaft, allowing it to wiggle around a bit. When I'd put tension on the pump to slide it all the way back, it'd tweak it a bit out of alignment, but not enough to through it under 'normal' driving. Straightened it out and no more issues, and the cold-start squeal that never went away despite belt tension is also gone.
