I'm considering getting one of these. Any opinions? Other than having to get the right belts afterwards are there any negetives here. DO you think the gains are worth it? Thanks all. :-)

First off, I don't have one but it's a general concesus that this a pretty good mod for "debogging" your engine. My reason for not yet having one, is the pain in the ass I know our crank pulleys can be. I don't have PS/AC currently and I can definetly feel the difference. The throttle response is alot better. So yeah go for it. You'll like it I'm sure.

Make sure to use the correct puller, for Chrysler engines. It can be "rented" at most autoparts stores. When installing, some time in the oven will help expand it to more easily slide onto the crank snout.

Trust me some aftermarket ones suck becuase there is some sqeaking that comes with the package. i know all about it. it was a BITCH getting off the stock pully, i even stripped the crank shaft bolt but i got lucky that i could rethread it. When i put on the aftermarket pully i put shit load of anit seaze just in case. good luck getting the stock one off

Thanks for the tips. I didn't know I could rent a puller. Yeah, baking aluminum @ 250 for a few hours will gain about the .0005 needed to fit the new pulley more easily. Just gotta do it VERY quickly. A thin coat of lithium grease helps too.
I just lost an auction for a used Unorthodox pulley. :-( I don't want to get a cheap Chinese one so I'm still hunting around for something that's in my price range. Wish I could get the exact specs or a blueprint better yet. I'd just have one made at an old shop I used to work at. Thanks again for the imputs guys. :-) If I had the time and knew the O.D.'s for an underdrive I could copy out the rest from the stock one I'd guess.

you should have a lightweight flywheel if you have a lightened crank pulley to balance out the engine shouldn't you? I mean, that's why they made the stock pulley weigh what it does right? To balance the engine and get rid of engine vibrations. I guarantee lightening one and not the other will mess with the longevity of the engine. My friend found that out the hard way. He had a good motor with near new compression and 80k miles. 12000ish miles later, engine vibrated so bad you could feel it in the car and spun a rod bearing. I'm sure it had something to do with it. It may add power, but I would rather deal with some power loss and build it somewhere else.

I have a cheap ebay one and I have had no squealing from it or any problems what so ever. I can not say if I feel a power difference due to the fact that I bought the car with a blown motor and I put the pulley on before I dropped the motor in. I also didnt bake the pulley but the engine was out of the car so thats probably why it was easier.

123473, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by Nemo, Jan-08-09 11:15 PM
Thanks Tux. How long have you run that pulley? Notice any vibrations?

Thanks alot halfasss, thyat kind of thinking is really appreciated. First time I've heard that one. I'll certainly do some checking that out. Hope we get some more opinions right here. Take care.

No problem. It just seemed like the only logical explaination for the fucked motor in my friends car since all he had was intake and a catback and the UDP. It just seemed to all make sense.

123475, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by teklein, Jan-09-09 05:51 AM
Thats completely untrue halfasss101.
The 420A's crank is balanced. A pulley milled out of billet, or with a steel center, will be balanced.
You do not need a lightweight flywheel in order to use a UDP. Ask the 1000's of people who are using them fine, and have been for a long time.

I'm not going to argue with you. I dont care who says it whether they agree or disagree. Do some research and you'll find incidents. It's a difficult topic to find, but its out there. And it's good enough for me to stay away from UDP's unless i have a flywheel to go with it.

The crank pulley on a 2GNT is not a balancer. You're wrong.
The flywheel and pulley spin on the same axis. Removing weight from one or the other won't have any effect on the balance of the entire assembly because it isn't balanced end to end, it's balanced on its axis of rotation. Unbalanced pullies can induce vibrations that over many thousands of miles can potentially lead to bearing wear, but they're not going to cause immediate failure. The flywheel has absolutely no bearing no the pulley you run.
|
123478, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by Nemo, Jan-09-09 09:36 AM
I agree Dark One. The balance is on the rotation. The pulley needs to be concentric between the bolt circle and the belt diameters and square to the shaft where it mounts and all should be just fine.

123479, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by cc8balla, Jan-09-09 09:57 AM
Im going to reiterate what has been said in this thread. Please use the right puller to take off the stock pulley.
And you have the right idea, bake the new pulley, and it SHOULD slide right on, you just need to be quick with it. And the only squeaking I have ever had is when it gets super cold here in Northern Ohio, she'll squeak until she gets warmed up.
And no you dont need to get a new fly.
Just thought I'd reiterate all the pertinent info in this thread as to avoid any confusion.

Lots of good info in here. It helps me too because I just got one of these. Granted, mine was the $30 one off Ebay as a Christmas present, so we will see how well mine holds up.
So our cars dont really need that thin strip of rubber on the stock pulley? Alot of my car buddies dont think so but the older folks, my dad, few other older car guys, say I will destroy my engine if there is no harmonic balancer. I think they are stuck in the V-8 days though...
Anyone know where I can find the numbers for the belts I would need?
|
123493, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by Nemo, Jan-09-09 09:40 PM
I just ordered my pulley today and will need to find the new belt sizes as well. You can always use the string at the aotu parts store method lol.
About that rubber strip, from another old guy here. think of it as vibration insurance. I've seen the difference before and it ain't pretty.

The damper's purpose on our vehicle is to protect the belt and accessories from excessive vibrations. Unlike a 4g63, you won't destroy your crank by not using one. The threat of lessened accessory and belt life is there, but countless numbers of people have used solid UDP's on these vehicles with nothing but good reviews, and to my knowledge without complaints of destroyed accessories.

And if you're a true 2G owner you keep spare belts in your emergency kit anyways and this wouldn't worry you one bit

Hmmm..... guess my friends spun rod bearing was just a freak of nature then. It just seemed to make sense since after only a year it took a shit. Guess i'll go crack open a beer and start reading some more.:beer

I got mine from Ebay and its working fine other then some Squeaking. I havnt felt any difference in power maybe cuz i have je with no turbo. Just get the cheap eday one and you will do fine. Halfass your crazy for saying that man. unbalanced.....your crazy man

I did order a cheap ($50) Ebay one-just made sure it was CNC machined and hard anodized first. I'll drill some lightening holes in it before I install it though. I have use of a digital readout Bridgeport mill-gotta maintain the balance ya know.

Mines already pretty light. 2lbs or less..

123534, RE: underdrive pulley Posted by ThePerfectShift, Jan-11-09 08:58 AM
You guys that are squeeling need to tighten your belt up. If the tensioners maxxed out, use the PS pump adjustment for the slack. and for the third time..... Use the right puller!

For awhile I was getting alot of squealing, mostly at startup. I tightened the belts, made sure everything was lined up, but still it wouldn't go away. As a last ditch effort, I swapped out my Gates belts with Gatorbacks and haven't had a problem since. I am using the customcargrills udp.

It does cause problems with cars that rely on the harmonic balancer to keep it balanced. But after reading Dark's post, i've been drinkin beer :beer and researching the 420a's rotating assembly for the last 4 somethin hours. :wary

Got my new pulley today! Not sure when I'll get it on though. Whenever I do my timing belt I guess-middle of March roughly. It's an ebay $50 one. I checked it out at the machine shop I used to work at. The bolt pattern is dead on and the concentricity is less than .0002 I'm extremely happy with that. Bought it from Speed_daddy on Ebay.

Slight update-the pulley I got was advertised wrongly and is for a 1G. I'm returning it and buying a used Unorthodox 2G from someone on this site. I'll let you know when it's on and what I think of it with a pic or two within a couple weeks.
